The recovery part is equally as hard on the carer as it is on the patient. From personal experience, I would imagine you are now terrified, terrified to stay in the same room because you know you will constantly watch his every move, his every breath to see if he is OK.

You will want time on your own but you will be terrified to leave him because there are no nurses or experts, it falls on you, so with him in the other room, you will constantly be checking him, in fact you will be up and down like a tarts knickers.

Every cough, every sniff, every moment - you will be hyper observant because nothing can happen if you keep your eyes constantly on him - can it?

You may lie beside him in bed and check him while he sleeps and you will go into overdrive asking him if he is ok. You may feel that he is 'broken' and not the same as he was, will he ever be the same and will you ever see him in the same light? You are used to seeing him as the strong one, now its your turn.

But whilst that can all be part of getting over a life threatening event, you need to take heart in the fact that they would not have discharged him had they not thought he was fit enough.

They would have been more than satisfied with his heart/lungs to send him home, I promise you that and if you are worried you can always contact his specialist.

He may be a bit 'broken' at the moment but he is on the mend and he will mend, his life may be different, he may be different and view things differently as may you.

Simple things like sitting next to him holding his hand, watching a movie, taking a step off the rat race for him to get better is all part and package of getting over illness and injury.

But you must take one step at a time, one day at a time, take the advice off his care team, look after him and look after yourself.

It is so hard in this situation and you feel at your most fragile but it does get better and it makes you appreciate everything more - especially each other.

Tina, I am glad your OH is home and on the mend.:thumbup:

I have something to look forward to at last- after the gastroscopy in 10 days time that is. OH has booked 3 nights in the Hunter Valley- my first Aussie holiday in 3 years. I'll actually get out of Sydney for the first time (other than a day trip to the Blue Mountains) and I'm really looking forward to it.
Got to take DD though. At 15 she's not old enough to chauffeur us around though.

My son's graduation in about 4 weeks time. He is wearing his kilt (as is hubby).
