Hmm....your first post on here is to complain about cultural differences?

Could it be that you're just not funny?

I have not found that Aussies do not have a sense of humour. I think it's just different. That said, I do find it difficult sometimes because of this cultural difference. For instance, UK sense of humour (mine anyway) is very self effacing, basically you take the michael out of yourself (and others collectively) to get a laugh and this in the UK makes you look better with your peers because we regard this as a good quality, well I do anyway. The Aussies I socialise do not do this, they do laugh at things and we do get on well but they just do not laugh if this includes them. This is just my observations and there are always exceptions but I do inquire if these exceptions have UK parents

english, American, German, Australia - all humour is different - what you might find funny doesn't necessarily mean that Aussie women will find it funny.

I lived in Oz for 5 years and didn't find it a problem. I find sarcasm alot more common in the UK - my hubby is one sarcastic and cocky bugger (probably why I fell for him!!)

Fraid not. I live in SE QLD and totally agree with you and so does the OH. I'm originally a Manc and I know that our sense of humour is very biting and sarcastic but it makes us laugh!! Have found the Kiwi SOH to be similar to ours but the Ozzies (generally speaking) just don't cut the mustard.

I read this yesterday and just thought, poor attempt at stirring, move on.

I have mostly Aussie and Kiwi friends here in Singapore. I think we end up together precisely because we share a dry, sarcastic sense of humour.

This leads me to believe that Dorothy's hypothesis may well be correct.

That last point is an intersting one. I've found that the Aussies atr work with whom I can share a joke almost always turn out to have British roots. Usually its not something I discover until months after meeting them, but virtually all those on my wavelength have turned out to have British parents, or have spent a lot of time in the UK.

Yup, all Aussie women hate the British sense of humour, you'd never see UK comedy on TV here ... heaven forbid in a DVD collection ...

<Disclaimer: English sense of humour in use, some of this may not be true>

Spot on, couldnt have put it better myself, in fact I may have to quote you. I had all sorts of trouble when I first came here, absorbing and assimilating because of the above facts. Mooncat is also right, about the Kiwis getting the UK style better than the Aussies, I much prefer to drink to excess with Kiwis as they are almost impossible to offend (by me at least)

Jumping to conclusions? Shame on you! And a mod too ...

Who hasn't thought along similar lines at 1 in the morning and decided their first BE post must be NOW!

So, think on ...

It's actually worse than that. It was 2.36am local time here in Sydney when he had the urge to post that. That's assuming, of course, that he is who he says he is - a Sydney-dwelling cockney .
