But Wol you've proved my point, rather than pay for AusStar and whinge about that - why not look at other channels like ABC and SBS..which are free...

Top Gear - I misread that as TopGun...I'll get me coat..

I am a sad downloader and a 30 minute episode of Coronation Street is actually only 21 minutes of programme. I think commercial channels in the UK are no different with regards to adverts, although the advert quality is substantially better in the UK.

I always thought Oz had way more ad time. Wiki agrees.

UK

the amount of airtime allowed by the UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom for advertising is an overall average of 7 minutes per hour, with limits of 12 minutes for any particular clock hour (8 minutes per hour between 6pm and 11pm). With 42-minute American exports to Britain, such as Lost, being given a one hour slot, nearly one third of the slot is taken up by adverts or trailers for other programs.

Oz

Similar to the European Union, advertising on Australian commercial television is restricted to a certain amount in a 24-hour period, but there are no restrictions on how much advertising may appear in any particular hour.[24] Australian television has one of the highest advertising content in the world. Prime-time can see 18 minutes or more of ads per hour. Furthermore, product ads wrapped up in informational content are labeled "public service announcements" and not included in the time restrictions; similarly with "this program brought to you by..." announcements, and station identifications. Consequently Australian viewers might see less than 40 minutes of actual program time per hour. Foreign, older television programs and movies are noticeably shortened; comedy shows often return from an ad break into laughter, for instance. Australia is also one of the few countries in the world where advertisements may appear prior to, and over the top of, the closing credits of a program.

Well I can assure you that an episode of Coronation Street is 21 minutes and that occupies a 30 minute time slot on ITV. Another show I downloaded recently that airs on ITV occupied an hour timeslot and the show itself is only just shy of 46 minutes.

I'm not sure about downloaded programs, but I do know that a lot of the time Oz gets 'import' versions of UK shows that have some time cut outs to allow for destination country advertising conditions. I remember a bit of a hoo ha about it in Oz approx 8-9 yrs ago.

Coronation Street is probably the heaviest loaded show for ads on British tv. I think a broader sample of programs will support what Wiki says.

What I really detested about Oz ads (apart from the dire 'shout in your face' content) was when a film would kick off with a solid block of viewing, then break for ads, then the gaps between ad breaks get shorter and shorter. You see a little of that on some programs here on certain channels (ITV4 for example) but nothing like in Oz.

These are just capped tv shows straight from ITV so no allowance for local ads. The show I watch is identical to the one aired on ITV minus the adverts which the uploaders just edit out.

We've got Austar only because Mrs Wol watches the celebrity cr..., sorry, stuff and we like to see the BBC news.

Most of the time I watch ABC or SBS though.

Thanks to Channel 10 and my shortage of digital channels I'm watching F1 live on the internet right now.

None of that changes the fact though. If CS has 9mins in a 30 min slot, then that next 30 mins will have 3 mins, which is a far better situation than the virtually unregulated ad time in Oz. Using CS for the general distribition of ads on tv in the UK is not a great example.
