What is this out of curiosity?
I'm prob wrong but I don't think anything is gonna sort Nic out apart from medicine. She's knackered ALL the time, putting on weight even tho she is VERY aware of what is good for her and bad. She rarely drinks, doesn't smoke, and altho I tease her all the time (

),For the record, it is medicine. In fact it was what every thyroid person used to be treated with back in the '40's in the UK. Then they worked out they could make something cheaper and generic in a lab and thyroxine is what you get.
Cheap and one size fits all.... bad way to go imo.
I know you're a good man who's concerned about his wife, as any guy should be in this situation, but don't tease her about her weight.
For years I was thinking it was me that was eating too much and I was putting the weight on because I was lazy.
The symptoms mimic depression and my now ex husband told me that I was 'intolerable' to live with back then, (Yeah, and he was a bunch of daisies!) so being ribbed for something you have no control over is horrible... and until she gets it sorted out, she may be craving carbs and salty snacks ... that's part of the adrenal fatigue... but it's fixable.
No more teasing ok?

I would stay away from calorie counting. You can eat low calorie and still be eating crap. Good nutrition is key.
Sounds like Paul is a lovely, concerned guy anyway. Great time for bonding - cook and eat healthily together, and exercise together. I've currently got my husband the eating weird shit my TCM guy prescribes me. Cooked papaya and white fungus is an acquired taste.

Oh, back to the OP, yes once medicated, your cholesterol will go down.

Hi PaulandNic - I guess it's Paul? Have you read the other thread where we all did some thyroid-girl-bonding? Let me find the link...
I had pig thyroid for a couple of months but longer-term I take Thyrosol, which is a herbal supplement. My case is different from a lot of the ladies here though, and conventional doctors would argue I don't have a problem. I did, however, have all the symptoms, just the T3 and T4 results were in range.

I'll print it off for Nic to read later too ...

Only way to go if you ask me ...

We'll be back to see the GP once the tests are back and see what he has to offer. I'll keep you informed ...

You lot are fantastic
Whether I'm one of the ones who gets sorted easily or I join the 'needs more effort to get it sorted' gang, it's good to know you are here
Thanks for your responses (and PMs). I'm off to see both Mum and sister this afternoon, think I'll quiz them too. Difficult to tell how badly Mum is affected as she's got quite a few problems. Sis seems to function normally but her weight fluctuates hugely.
One question. When I eat a main meal, I feel uncomfortably full really quickly, it feels as if the food gets stuck just below my ribs rather than in my tummy. Anyone else get that? It's not nice, but at least it stops me eating as much as I would otherwise do (I do tend to comfort eat when I'm fed up)....

Another sufferer here.
I was diagnosed here in Australia 8 months ago. I'm on 50 mcg thyroxine. Like you, i felt quite positive after diagnosis, partly because it was reassuring that I felt the way I did for a reason & partly because I thought something was finely beinging done about it. Unfortunately i don't feel any different. I've questioned the Dr twice now, he ran some more tests & said the levels I'm on are fine

When he gave you the thyroxine did you start off on 25 mcg and move up to 50 over a few weeks, Leigh?
I don't know anyone with a dodgy thyroid who does well on 50. You're taking too little of the stuff to remove your symptoms. Top thyroid doctors go on how well you feel, not what your numbers say?
Do you have any of your test results? What test did he give you where he says your numbers are ok?
Many UK thyroid sufferers end up moving their own dose up by purchasing a pill cutter and incrementally doing it ... Cut a 50 in half and you have a 25...
Of course I wouldn't advise you to do that... It should be a doctor moving your dose up....
But that's only because they can't get hold of a good doctor. Sounds like you need to find a better doc.

As you may know I have an underactive thyroid.
I'm on levothyroxine and feel alright - however - I swell up like you wouldn't know in my legs and ankles most days. I am overweight (not mega) currently at weightwatchers - lost a stone and continue to eat healthy and walk daily.
My doctor is a stickler for the rule book - if it's not on the blood test everything is fine
What can I do besides constantly take water tablets???
HELP!!

I think you will find Tiddlypom has posted several useful links very recently if you care to do a search!
Alternatively send her a pm!

Change your doctor mate. Water retention can be a symptom of hypothyroidism and the chances are that you are not receiving the right treatment. Meanwhile there's an article here that gives you some info on what other things you can do to help.

Thanks for the link, Wendy, it's really good as I'd done a google search and the results were baffling

Try google.com.au next time as there seems to be a lot more info here than in the UK.

Ok to update on Nic's blood test.
She had it yesterday and see the GP today and yes, her thyroid is very much underactive. The GP said the result was quite a bit worse since the last test 3 weeks ago.
She's been given Thyroxine and 100MCG tablets and been told to take half for 7 days, then a full tab and will have another blood test in 3 weeks time.
She mentioned to the GP that she'd heard that this medication wasn't the best and he poo poo'd the idea and said he hasn't had anyone not have success with this medication.
We'll see I spose, but he's told her not to expect miracles till the correct dose has been worked out which will take a little time.
