My boss just took early retirement, she was a tough woman to work for.
I still have a ton of respect for her though, but I know lots of people left the department because they hated her.
I'll be going to her going away party, cos she had the balls to do what previous bosses didn't. (and also to thank **** she is gone)
But not dead though

World economics:
Every country start off with a primary economy, usually a resource such as tin, copper coal etc.
Then after a few hundred years they start to 'value-add' to that. i.e. make a car out of the steel they've made.
After that they realise they can make computers.
All the while places like India and China are catching up.
Then they realise China and India are doing all the graft, so they need to become more inventive. The service industry evolves.
After that, who knows, but we've got 3 billion indians and chinese desperately trying to catch up. So the next series of Dragons Lair better be a scorcher full of inventive ideas.
But to blame it all on one woman, who was only going with the inevitable (coal industry uneconomic, steel industry uneconomic, ship industry uneconomic) is mad. Who made it uneconomic?

May I suggest that you read Mark Steele's book, "Reasons to be Cheerful". It gives a very good commentary of those times.

Sorry but I've got about 2000 books on my 'must read' list before I get to him.
So enlighten us with a snippet of his humour on Scargill and Thatcher.

Can't wait.

I avoided this thread for a while, but I've got to say that she did what was needed at the time. Yes, you wouldn't want to fall out with her and yes, she knew how to use power in the true Machiavellian sense.
Yes, while she was in power I hated her for what she did, but I look back now and see that she was a leader (in the true sense of the word), much more that Major, Blair or Brown could ever contemplate.
Looking back at the steel & shipbuilding industries in the 70's & 80's they were in decline and seeing the situation now with the costs of shipbuilding in Europe versus Korea for example, she saved a lot of trouble. She stood up to the unions, which was what was needed at the time. She stood up to foreign powers, including the US, which Blair never did and I hereby promise to eat my left eyeball if Brown ever does!!
Council tax. Never forgive her for that. Lots of other things... sh*t - I mean she could be a nasty piece of work, couldn't she?
But, to paraphrase the words of Churchill: "Sometimes it isn't enough to do your best. You need to do what is required."
I say, let her have her grace.....

Never

I am tired of this thread now. It's a split down the middle arguement that will just keep going on and on and on.
