until May last year there was a much bigger mosque only two blocks north of the currently proposed site and nobody gave a shit.

"Lower Manhattan is pretty small. You can’t see Ground Zero from our current building and on completion of our planned building some years from now, there won’t be any views of the Ground Zero memorial from the building. To honor those killed on September 11th, we have planned for a public memorial within our future facility as well as reflection space open to all"

...and they see the possible issues around building too close to Ground Zero

Whether they gave a shit then is neither here nor there. The fact is they give a shit now and that's the issue.

One would almost think that something like 60 Muslims (excluding hijackers) did not die in the attacks. Small percentage, but they still died.

Germans fought and died for the British in WWII as well, small percentage, but they still died.

Tribute to the Waffen SS for the South Bank then?

Islam is not Al Qaida.

The same morons who think Obama is a Muslim are also against the mosque. Michael bloomberg, the Republican mayor of NYC approves of the mosque.

even taking into account rhetoric, I don't get the argument.
a strudel shop or a pub selling lager would be closer comparisons.

Waffen SS - bad
Mosque - neutral

This is a first, I'm agreeing with elfman about something... :)

'Thomas Jefferson, who owned and read a copy of the Quran, wrote in 1816, "The most sacred of the duties of a government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to all its citizens." Today government officials are dictating where private citizens should erect their houses of worship.'

Mosque - neutral.

Really? I think that's debateable in many cases.

we could do away with pork shops, in case the mafia are cutting up bodies in them, same for barber shops. catholic churches in case little kiddies are being abused in them. Lets do away with council houses in case the IRA are making bombs in them or Nilsen like serial killer is in one.

I don't. It's a church for people to go and pray in and learn more about their religion. I'm so glad I'm not a Muslim, the crap they must have to deal with on a day to day basis because people can't see the person through the religion must be be horrendous.
