I'm a pom, living in Qld, married to a Qlder. And just like some Brits can adapt to living in Aus, and some can't, some Aussies wouldn't cope with living in the UK. Smaller, more cramped, different weather, just that it wouldn't be "home" all reason why I know he wouldn't be happy living there.
On a particularly lousy week, when nothing goes right, I hate it here, most of the time I tolerate it. I know that he is less tolerant than I am and would find it harder to cope in the UK than I do here.

Why are the police in the background doing nothing?. Drinking in public, animal cruelty, carrying a LIDL bag AND wearing a Rankers top. Worth 6 months at least. Charles Darwins theories about each generation being stronger and more intelligent than the preceeding one is totally blown out of the water with these photos.

Sick of dog poo round my area and kids hanging about smoking in their designer trainers and tracksuits whilst their parents probably spend their money on fags and beer instead of giving their kids a good diet. I am sick of political correctness where you can get put away for giving a cheeky scoundrel a clip round the ear. I am sick of the suing culture. I am sick of selfish people who park in mother and child spaces just because they want to park right outside the supermarket. I am sick of a society where no one speaks to their neighbours and we all live in our own little boxes with scant regard for anyone else.

I need to escape!! Will Australia give me what I am looking for? Is it a better life? Is it just same old thing wherever you go?

cheer me up. Please!!! Tell me you are standing in your gardens in Oz, having a barbie and the sun is shining. Cold one for me please!!

I could not agree more. I lived in Oz for ten months but had to return, just could not sell the house in Britain. It was not all perfect in OZ, we found some of the locals in rural areas to be incredibly rude people, and I had a lot of difficulty getting reasonably paid work in Australia. I found that alot with the expats, skilled people mowing lawns and such to get by! Now I am back in Britain, my wife and I have well paid jobs but little money to spare for pleasure, the weather is awful, the place is a dump in a lot of areas. It is so depressing, I miss that sunshine and the adventure in Australia, I would love to go back.

ready for a "why" monologue

just read the whole thread through..there's a lot of different people with different ideas in different places..having lived here and there i have matured more to how life is. when you emigrate it doesn't matter who you are or where you come from you end up in the bag of "immigrants" white brits find it the easiest to assimilate as they at least have a cultural background that resembles that of australians. look at the jobs non white people get when they emigrate? look at all the taxi drivers they are quite often doctors.lawyers etc but they can't register their qualifications (how must they feel) when ever i get a taxi i try and get the drives story. they have great hope, they are the ones who have been lucky enough to get here in the first place. for many there is no question of returning to their home nation and i am sure miss all the same things that poms do. it's interesting that quite a lot of reasons for "getting out of britain" is about "escaping" from the weather or the people and boring lives. i reckon where ever you are born will always be your home and there will always be some of us for some reason don't want to stay there but also miss it..that's ok. the sad thing is it often takes leaving home to realise it's the place you wanted to be. emigrating to australia is a very expensive exercise and not one to take lightly..put "love" in the equation makes it so much more difficult and tragic my heart goes out to the broken hearted, if you are thinking it's gonna be easy, read some of the threads. but don't forget there are many more people who have come here and are really happy (they don't post on here too much) i think from my experience it's due to the reaction they get if they are enjoying life ( i suspect they would enjoy life anywhere) i think to leave your birth nation is a genetic thing not well understood. what i do think is we should all think about what we say to each other and be a bit more sympathetic. but i do think there's a negative bias sometimes. uk and australia are both great places and we are all lucky to live in either it's just a matter of taste. the first few years are hard anywhere you have to start at the bottom and work up that's the nature of migration.

Do you think you will go back once your house sells or is it too late to go back now?
I have heard a lot of people who come back home from Oz regret their decision in the end but can't afford or are unable to go back.

Surely, if your husband "loved" you, he wouldn't want you to be in a country where you're obviously unhappy? If niether of you can live in each other's countries, maybe it's time to go your own ways so you can both be truly happy?

I too am sick of UK and want a better life for my children. Eldest is 11 and attends one of best schools in area. We went to parents evening a couple of weeks ago and teacher told us to get him a tutor at home because he can not progress in class because most of children in his class do not speak English as a first language and that teacher cannot spend enough time with our son.
Also I needed some help of CAB. I telephoned for appointment to see someone. I was asked if I was on benefits. When I explained that Hubby and me both work and do not claim benefits, they told us that they only see people on low incomes and benefits and that we would need to see a solicitor. We cant afford a solicitor. We pay our taxes, dont receive handouts yet have no quality of life here. My hubby even does shifts at a pub 2 nights a week to make ends meet. The regulars in the pub he works in are mostly on benefits yet afford to drink every night, smoke and take holidays in Benidorm twice a year.
We cant wait to leave.

Hiya

yes makes you sick doesn't it. It is hard not to sound like right wing bigot (not saying you are!) but when you see this injustice, it makes you mad. I am sick of people with benefits being given this and that whilst the rest of us work ourselves into the ground. It's like tax credits. I want to work part time but I can't. I am forced to stay at home, which drives me crazy sometimes because I can't afford childcare for 2 children under 5. I have no family able or willing to help out. I need to work as we can't afford to live on one wage but we would be worse off if I worked. If I was a single parent, it would all be paid for me. Labour want Mums back into work - well, flipping well help us out then!!

I've know someone on benefits and they are always buying all the gadgets, things I haven't even heard of. I reckon if I haven't heard of them, I don't need them but I couldn't afford to anyway. What a joke. Sure there are dole bludgers in Oz too though. These people will always be there. As my Dad says just comfort yourself that they will never achieve anything in life. Who wants to rely on benefits anyway?

Please remember that some people do deserve benefits I am a work injured nurse I am not entitled to compensation and am facing the sack as I have been sick for a long time so I will have to go on benefits, I have paid taxes all my working life (27 years) so I think I am entitled to this help!

I know you didn't mean everyone but reading some of this makes me feel sad that I may be considered a scrounger ;)

no way are you a scrounger! I was not referring to genuine people but people that see welfare as a way of life. There is difference between genuine incapacity and those who just don't want to work. I am talking about someone I know and his ilk who just work for a bit and then take 6 months off for no good reason. Will the NHS not pay out? That sounds terrible.

Hi

I dont think all people on benefits are scroungers but there is a family we know and the dad supposidly has a bad back. He receives a brand new car every 3 years. Only has to pay for petrol. They live rent free, enjoy holidays abroad, has 3 children in designer gear. They have just bought a parrot costing hundreds of pounds (tacky I know). They also have a plasma telly. He does not have a bad back at all. He manages to carry his 6 year old girl on his shoulder, swing her around, play football with kids and stand at a bar all night.
These types of people get me mad. If HE is unfit to work , then why doesnt his wife get a job.:curse:
