Australia has more litigation cases per capita than any other country in the world, that's why its become the biggest control freak nanny country I have ever been to. If you're a free spirit and bit of a maverick don't come here it'll drive you bonkers. If you need or like to conform to ridiculous amount of pedantic rules then this place may suit you.

where did you live and what did you do?
if you have a job that is a "social justice" based career then yes you see it all and it does taint your views. there are some annoying things about australia and it depends what your values are. but i don't ever feel my free spirit is under threat here, as i like outdoor stuff i feel much more free really as the weather very rarely interferes with what we are doing.

Nothing wrong with the UK, it's a fab place. So is Aus with all the same problems, sometimes worse, sometimes better, Don't ever run from a place, run to a place and enjoy the experience and the adventure. Everything you think you hate about the UK can be found here. Utopia doesn't exist and would be deathly dull if it did.
I agree about the weather though. Sounds like it's been a fairly rubbish 12 months and I don't do cold weather, makes me ill.

Totally agree. They are both great countries. Each with their positives and negatives. It's just that I prefer to live here.

Bloody cheer up - you're convinced you're stuck here - might as well just get on with it. You waited long enough for the permanent job so you'll have to stick in or get another one. Just becasue you're married, doesn't mean you HAVE to stay. No kids, no mortgage, no ties - if it was me I'd call it a day and cheer myself up by going back to the UK - at least you'd (maybe) be a bit happier. If I hated it that much, no amount of "I'm married" would stop me going back.

i have been in the exact place that you are. i couldn't stand being here in australia and blamed my situation on myself for being married to my husband who loved it..i won in the end and we went back. it may be that you will both have to give and take some how. but i know that i have times where i get really negative about australia and it's a downward spiral and gets out of control. i don't have a top tip to help you where you are but just be gentle with yourself and try not to focus on it too much. life has a weird way of twisting and turning. but at the end of the day you can't live a sad life for ever something will give. you deserve to be happy

Major incident earlier, the washing machine stopped a good 3 hours ago and I haven't hung the clothes out yet because I've been too busy watching a Joe Strummer documentary ... more news on the crisis as it comes in.

As for the neighbours bit what a load of crap, i had the best neighbours in the world in ayrshire

before this turns into a slagging match can we please remember that having good neighbours is pretty much down to luck.
some may be great, they move and you end up with a-holes and the reverse can happen.
