I've put my name down for a hip replacement, and I wonder if any of you people hanging around the barbie have opinions on the wisdom of going ahead with it. I'm 84, and I'm waiting for the result of all the cardio work (the one where you have to sleep with the wires attached to your chest), and then to get the OK to go ahead. I'm not looking forward to it with any joy, I have to say. The only time I've been in hospital overnight in my long life was when I had my appendix taken out at the age of 19. And, I'm not in pain - because I walk gingerly enough not to be in pain. And that's really part of my question... if I'm not actually in pain, do I need to have the operation? I'm a lazy old coot, and averse to exercise, and I can't really see myself obeying the physio or doctor telling me that I must exercise. I hobble and shuffle along, but I've got used to that, and I'm never in a hurry. So...

What do you reckon?

I reckon this post should be here: Broken bodies and bio mechanics. Let me know if you want me to move it, please do not make a duplicate post.

Thanks for giving me the option, JG: I don't follow The Lounge forum and didn't know it had a medical thread. No. I won't switch, if you don't mind - not just yet, anyway - and no, I won't make a duplicate post. What I will do is read all the posts on that thread and see if any of them have something related to my post. Would that be okay with you?

Well, I did go through that medical thread as far as Post 2000, then gave up. There were only two passing references to hip replacements that I found. Anyway, I decided today to abandon the replacement option; the doctor agreed with me that if I wasn't in pain, let it go. I'll see what a physio will do for me. End of topic.

I have back and knee problems. Every 3-4 weeks I go to a chiropractor. She does not crack bones, but uses an activator. I would never use one who cracks bones/joints etc. She works miracles on me. I have tried physio, but it made no difference.

For what it is belatedly worth Gordon , I feel you have made the wise decision here. You might have had the replacement only to find that there was a knock on effect for the other load bearing joints or that you find that during the convalescence / adjustment period another problem arises. due to restricted and altered movement. It happens.

Further , you are mindful and sensible so not enduring excruciating pain and at 84yrs why tinker with something like this when you are managing. Some physio for strength building might help. The right pain anti inflammatory might also help.

You understand my reasoning perfectly, BEVS. Thanks for the support. I left the decision a bit late, but I think the (specialist) doctor was quietly relieved too!

This thread got pushed off-topic and off-target a few months ago, which is a pity, I think. The title, "Shrimps on the Barbie", was carefully chosen to fit in with the BE's choice of "Barbie" as the general chat-room for the Australian section, and it seems a bit silly to abandon it without good reason. What do you reckon?

Sorry, but unless you've bought the forum, you don't get to tell people that they can't post on a particular thread.
I guess you could try asking a Mod to move all our chatty posts into their own thread if they offend you so much........

.....and a happy new year to you.......
