"The Scheme"

Yes, a UK channel would use subtitles for shows like this. The Scheme is subtitled on BBC iPlayer.

Watched the whole of the first episode. As usual it's the blokes on the drink who cause the most destruction and mayhem. Sometimes I think those religious types were onto something trying to stop the masses drinking.
The aimlessness of a lot of them is what stands out for me. And the good people trying to control the mayhem. That poor father - I hope his son learns something from prison rather than gets destroyed by it.
The smoking, WOW, everywhere around the little kids, even smoking when pregnant!!!
As an aside this program would probably be subtitled if shown in Australia. I was wondering whether a UK channel would ever use subtitles for shows like this or would they be pilloried for subtitling their own citizens?

As i said, i lived there! and for the record my 18 year old (who doesn't smoke) has assured me she has encountered more teenagers here in melbourne than in kilmarnock that smoke, so somewhere kilmarnock parents, education and society are doing somehting right in this role, !
Please remember we are seeing the minority of teens and residents in kilmarnock in this show, i stayed there for 30 years, married and had my two kids there, have many friends, in laws, and old neighbours there, and would defend its reputation all i can!
I have no grounds as i do not work in social care in aus, but i think they like to keep social problems, of any sort (and my suspicion is especially the homeless rate for poor buggers who cant afford rent and awaiting housing), firmly under wraps in aus!, where in the u.k its in your face on bbc! as it should be , coz only be seeing the problem, good or bad can it be addressed!

The "Are some of these people even human?" comment had nothing to do with their use of language and everything to do with their appalling behaviour - particularly towards each other - which in some cases was utterly inhuman. Frankly, I'm amazed that more people haven't commented on it.

Pardon me for failing to identify with violent alcoholics and drug abusers who beat pregnant women. It's just one of my many faults.

possibly Margaret, wasn't really interested in the Australia/UK thing just amazed to see the amount of smoking going on still, and around kids and pregnant girls smoking - doesn't matter where it is happening still quite surprising to see it like that.

Don't worry, I don't even know where it is and will never remember the name of the town anyway - I can understand you defending it but, don't worry, most of us aren't silly enough to think everywhere is like that

"I have no grounds " - I agree you don't.

I've just watched a few clips on YouTube and I found it so sad. Some of the kids don't stand a chance really.
Many of the people on the show come across as fighters and do their best against the odds no matter what little money they have.
The people in the scheme would probably just welcome the chance for their kids to stay out of trouble, do well at school and be happy where they live now. Not too much to ask really.

Isn't it ironic that Australia was founded by the same type of people who are mocked and derided on this thread by some.
