"The Scheme"

Anyone see this??? Six part doc on a Scottish scheme (Kilmarnock)? God what an embarassment, well at least it's brought back every reason I don't want my children being brought up in this country. Sure there is beautiful places in Scotland......but drive a short while from any of them and you'll find a "scheme"

I used to work in that scheme and it's not as bad as was made out for the Jeremy Kyle voyeurs.
I 've seen many shitty areas in Victoria .
I live in Scotland and I'm delighted my kids are not growing up in Australia.
Why are you laughing at the end of your post?
I think that you'll find that you're probably not far up the scale from the people you mock.
Affluent areas in the Uk are vastly superior on all levels to anywhere I could find in Australia.

Also, I think if you have a decent life think twice about Aus, I know self delusion is a great way of dealing with doubt.Hence your disparaging remarks.
Wait until you see some of the pooorer areas inAus .Just like UK schemes with sunshine.

Episode 1 available on YouTube (here). It's like stepping back into the 17th Century - and not in a good way.

Are some of these people even human? Occasionally you can hear them attempting to speak English. At least, I think that's what they're trying to do.

Oh, my. You didn't care for Palm Beach, Whale Beach, Woollahra, Woolwich, Hunters Hill...? Spent some time in pretty swanky places in Kelvingrove, the New Town, Mayfair, Dulwich, Virginia Water etc and could certainly see the attraction and why people would like to live there, but to say that they were vastly superior on all levels is a bit much.

I have also spent a little time in the rougher parts of Sydney and while I didn't particularly want to live or spend time there, with the possible exception of Redfern, I didn't think they were anywhere near as bad as some of the estates in London. (But I don't claim to be an expert here, I'm just mouthing off, as it were).

I agree with you, though, that it's pretty distasteful that some people use this as an opportunity to sneer at others. It reminds me that in London pubs next to mental asylums used to build elevated platforms for beer gardens so that punters could drink and laugh at the "lunatics". Like the 17th Century? You would have thought we'd learned something since then, in that case. Some people would use it as an opportunity to consider how we came to be in a situation where so many are without work, literacy, central heating. http://www.poverty.org.uk/summary/scotland.htm But others would rather throw metaphorical tomatoes at the people they consider untermenschen...

Culturally the Uk is vastly superior to anywhere in the new world.
I worked in the scheme which is the subject of the documentary for 7 years
and whilst in socio economic terms it was poor the families were not representative of the area as a whole.
The OP i feel will not be residing in the swankier areas you mention and that I agree there are attractive places most anywhere.
If I was poor I would rather live in Australia than Britain (possibly).
I feel angry that someone would laugh at peoples misfortune as they plan to leave the country.
I doubt the OP will find Australia better than her life here

Re: "The Scheme"

Let's just get this staight for those of you who seem to think I'm mocking the whole of Scotland and it's people........wrong!!! I love the fact I'm Scottish and there is much to be proud of, however, the "scheme" is unfortunate to have certain idiots as aired. I am well aware that there are many decent individuals in the same area and I feel sorry they have to live next to drug dealers, women beaters and complete wasters who the tax payer are keeping. Oh and I'm not delusional, I'm well aware Australia has it's fair share of idiots as any country has.
