Also eating a heavy meal late at night is a no no,as well as overdoing it on the old fried foods.
My doc prescribed some med which worked a treat, but I have just looked for them and cant find them ,so unfortunately cant tell you what they are called. There were 8 little tabs in like a little booklet. Sorry that prob doesnt help much,if I find them i will post their name. Hope you are feeling better soon

I was prescribed Cetirizine (one at night) and Omeprazole (one in morning). The problem completely cleared up in just a few days.

Reflux can also be caused by a weakened lower easophageal spincter - the little trap door that lets food into the stomach from the gullet. This is what I have, and pretty much all food causes me reflux, but some foods are much worse than others.

The only real treatment for this is long term maintenance medication or surgery where they wrap a part of your stomach around the LES to strengthen it.

In retrospect, I should have had this done many years ago, but I was very fearful of the surgery, and tried [unsuccessfully] to control it by diet, and now am on the maintenance dose of pantoprazole.

For the OP, it may be something that diet alone isn't able to keep under control.

Fundiplication is an increasingly viable option for our older son. The main issue seems to be around gas release after surgery. Success rates seem to vary. Good luck. Gastroenterology seems to be an area with a lot of progress to be made.

When I was diagnosed, it was before the mainstream adoption of keyhole for it, and they were talking about having to break my sternum to get at the LES, which was why I thought about alternative methods.

I think that no it is mostly all done with KH surgery. maybe it's time to get on a waiting list, as I am paranoid about developing Barrats, even though I have regular endoscopies to monitor it.

After a couple of weeks of heartburn and scary swallowing problems went back to Doc this morning for barium swallow x-ray results.

He confirmed reflux and, as many posters here have mentioned, he prescribed Nexium and short-term diazepam to relax the esophagus.

Didn't mention endoscopy, which surprised me, or blood test for ulcers... but might ask GP for a blood test anyway, before start the medication.

I hate taking medications, as have had weird reactions in the past to some, but most on Nexium on this forum seem ok with it?

The list of potential side effects online is rather daunting though.

Informed views on the above welcome please. (And thanks again to previous posters. )

I don't like the thought of taking meds long term unless it is absolutely necessary. I found Nexium to be good short term. I took it for about a year before I decided to stop taking it...that was about 3 years ago and I haven't felt any need to restart it.

It's midazolam they give you plus a spray of local anaesthetic on the back of your throat. Although midazolam exits the system pretty quickly you won't be allowed to drive yourself home.

Where/when are you having it done (PM if you like). If I can I'll drive you home when you're done.

That's what I've had each time. Woken up so refreshed though, it's been the best kip ever. Not allowed to drive home and have to be signed out of the waiting room by an adult. However once home, I've driven to the shops or school etc.

I had the IV one a few weeks ago, fantastic, didn't feel any side effects after about 10 mins of wakeing up. I only live round the corner from the surgery so i told my wife who works in the CBD i would find my own way home even tho they said i would need to be escorted. The nurse was being super strict as she found out i went home unescorted the last time i did it, ended up saying i needed to go to the toilet and then did a runner

The husband had one for a minor op, called me to go down and sign him out, 15 mins down the motorway. Signed him out and drove home whilst he went and found his car to drive himself back.

That's a very kind offer I might have to cancel it, though, as eldest child injured himself this afternoon and is now on crutches. We'll see what orthopaedics say about him on Monday, I was meant to be having my endoscopy on Tuesday morning, but don't know if he will be at school.
