Well, actually there are a whole class of behaviours that are "the most natural acts in the history of the world" that we don't do in public - mostly those that remind us we are animals.
And your "go someplace else to" could equally well apply to breastfeeding.
The biggest problem I see with public breastfeeding is the usage of it as a militant act - the woman who chooses the most public spot to whap'um out and looks to dare anyone else to say something. The 'look, I'm special' mindset designed as a dominance behaviour - they deserve to get called on it.

I just used to flop mine out the bottom of my top

(These days, I'd have to flop them out the bottom of my skirt... )

Where are you? I thought the whole of Australia had banned smoking inside public buildings now. Can't smoke inside any cafe I've been to in the last 10 years or so.

Debate is healthy, its what challenges us and sometimes changes our perceptions when we hear, and allow ourselves to hear (hint hint!!), opposing or even agreeable views presented in a different way.
To use the 'child cannot be held to ransom' statement is unnecessary and adds zero to any argument, in fact is almost laughably nonsensical were it not for the fact that you actually think like that.
I applaud your defence of breastfeeding in public but you show no tolerance to others views, which mostly agree with the whole issue but just making some common sense caveats in varying scenarios.

I went to Melbourne Easter 2011 & there were smokers within pub covered eating areas @ St Kilda Beach. It was surprising as I thought such a cosmopolitan state like Victoria would have been among the first to outlaw it.
