Re: Please take a long holiday first.
He may have the problem a lot of people have with the need to get the Aus certification. Please don't shoot me down in flames if I'm talking out of my a*rse on that, I just gather it affects a lot of sparkies & plumbers etc.
Personally, researching the salary I could expect to be earning, if my qualification was recognised, and how what I could earn fitted with the cost of living was one of the first areas I looked at - its the only way that I could establish whether we would be able to make the move without ending up broke the other side of the planet. OH is rather specialised in what he does, so I needed to be sure that we could survive on my money first. As far as hours goes, I work stupid hours now, it would need to be ludicrous before it made things worse.

One should always research pay rates compared to average cost of living in the area they want to move, that much makes perfect sense.
I may find it a bit harder if I were in Sydney with house prices etc so obviously, I'd be stupid to have moved there knowing the expense.
I believe that for many, it's purely a case of thinking how bad the uk is and rushing off to another country without really doing any research, then bitching after they arrive about some of tghe most trivial things you could ever imagine, like not being able to get decent nickers or bisto.

Re: Please take a long holiday first.
No wonder I want to go back to uk!!!
I am a nurse with three children, I work very hard thankyou very much! There is no need to be so rude!
In my opinion, which I thought was the whole idea of this thread was to compare peoples opinions, I DO NOT want to work twice as hard for the same money, I want quality of life with my children. My husband is now working 6 days a week, and my 17 year old leaves the house at 6.30am and returns at 6pm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So I dont think we are lazy!! We have less time with the younger 2 children, but still make an effort to make family time however this is very difficult, as I have worked nearly every weekend since arriving here!!!
But thanks for your OPINION!!

anyone who sells all that they have worked hard for
and drags their family half way around the world
should have, at the very least a working knowledge of the industry for which they are supposed trained,
yes getting licenced as a spark can and more often is a nightmare
i know i`m a sparky and along with others i try to point people in the right direction re licences artc etc but and its a big but i`m friggin amazed at the number of people who having already arrived in aus arn`t aware of how to get the artc or a licnece ( some didnt even know they needed one )
come on the onus is on the migrant to sort him/herself out
no one else is going to do it for you

Precisely why we're not looking to move to Sydney
You weigh up where the jobs for you are, where this matches the housing you can afford etc etc. I don't understand why some people don't do this, I really dont.

Learn from my mistakes folks.
Please do not judge Australia on these glossy TV programmes as I did. I
went over as an electrician and had to work hard 6 days a week just to make ends meet, it has cost me thousands of pounds to realise I could not hack the way of life or the wages, go with eyes wide open and you might love it.

Re: Please take a long holiday first.
Most people here only get no more than $30./hr (shop assistants up to $17hr, clerks etc). The general trend is to earn more to live more. Most tradies around Brisbane are now running around in brand new $50k+ 4X4's.

Re: Please take a long holiday first.
Seeing that sparkies, plumbers, locksmiths etc, etc usually charge at least an $80+ callout fee on top of the normal hourly rate (or part thereof, which you still pay an hour for anyway) for out of normal hours work, I fail see the that they can be working for LESS money for the family.

Re: Please take a long holiday first.
With anyone at all in the uk able to pass themselves off as a sparky, how do the wages compare to oz ? If you install even the most basic electrical item here you have to be licensed. Crikey, I refuse to get a sparky in to install a simple ceiling fan or new light fixtures.
