I remember reading Shogun when I was about 11 - turning the last page and thinking 'I fancy reading that again'.. and going back to the beginning. I was convinced for a while that I could speak Japanese purely on the back of it

They were showing Shogun on TV and as I'd read the book (and all the others by Clavell) and seen the series when it was originally shown, I watched it with my 15 year old daughter, who is into all things Japanese and is teaching herself to speak it. (I must also admit to remembering some of the Japanese phrases myself.)
