So.... watching the BBC .... 2 topics ... GB gold and lack of Aussie gold.
The BBC are talking about how money makes success at Olympics and are scratching their heads as to why Australia had 50 million reserved for Olympic sport that was never spent. Any ideas?

They should use that cash to tempt back all the world class Aussie coaches who have moved overseas to coach Australia's rivals. That's the real reason for Australia's lack of gold success.

Funny that Pendleton's silver was way down the list of headlines in one UK paper...even though it was an end of an era story - it's not just an Australian paper that sticks to the positive headlines...which in the case of the UK - was about Hoy..
Because it cannot be sustained. Even though the track looks small and non cyclists could be thinking that the bike does a lot of the work, that's far from the case.
So what they are doing when they are going so slowly for the first 1.5 laps is jostling for track position. The rider at the back will try to dive underneath the front rider to get the sprinters line, but the rider in front will 'shut the door' and hold them higher so they can get maintain position.
I hope that makes sense

In other news:
I've never seen Pearson hurdle - but now I have - she is an incredible athlete...amazing to watch - and a deserved win. Australia's very own Gunnell!!!

She absolutely blasted the field away! Really impressive to watch.... you sure she isn't British? Can we make her British? Did she have a British Grandmother?

So given your explanation, and reading accounts, it seems Meares tried to go really slow, knowing that Pendelton couldn't stay behind for long...without falling of her bike - and when Pendelton had to go - entice her to hit the line by not giving her much space? I read an account where it says Meares indeed took Pendleton high....wouldn't you take them low - so they can't get past and can only do so by having to go against gravity....don't get it mate.

Asked if she was carrying the mantle for Australia by the BBC .... she said she was staying with her aunt in Tonbridge. Didn't answer the baiting BBC question - great deflection. The aunt is british so there's hope yet.

Pendleton actually says in the post race interview that Meares pushed into her and she pushed back which lost her the balance she had..... Still, its not like the Aussies ran to complain or anything.... they wouldn't be sad like the French would they?
