There's a lot of assumptions in there and I wonder if someone was drowning if they'd be so fussy?

Well to be fair, if I was bobbing about like a bit of shark bait, I'd hope the life guard could run across the beach at a pretty decent clip before swimming over and getting me.

Though at least this chap is looking out at the water. Most of the life guards that I've seen in the town beaches around me just gawk at the student birds sunning it up and wouldn't notice someone drowning till it was too late :D

Like some have said previous..i don't care what they look like as long as they can pull someone from the surf.....and another point is that these guys do it for nothing.....they volunteer, so maybe a bit of appreciation would be in order as opposed to commenting on their ability to do the job....

God knows how many people would die every year if it was'nt for them.

Just a point to the original poster.....would you comment on say a member of the Police / Ambo or even the SES being overweight and question their ability ???

I'd hope that an overweight cop could chase a crim. Obesity doesn't change how well you can do the technical side of your job, but it does create difficulties with mobility etc. I know that there are fitness tests to be passed, and once you fail then you are out, but sadly, people judge on appearances, and always will.

I admire anyone who will give up their time to look out for the weak and the witless and TBH the often drunk who put themselves in harm's way.

Until someone decides they are going to have to eat someone to survive......

Granted not all lifesavers are young, toned, bronzed beauties... If only! :D but you expect that they maintain a healthy life in order for them to do their job more effectively... I.e eat right and exercise, in which case they wouldn't look like the guy in that pic.

I totally agree

Which is why the trolls we used to get full of bile (and a curious form of literal hatred) about Australia copped it. Noone minded their risky expose of the Antipodes - it was more the attitude that went with it - which seemed to be one of the reasons behind the disappointment...

I do know that a variety of people can be fit for purpose. Look at positions 1-15 on an amateur rugby team. Something for everyone. I know that you can be fit but unhealthy.

Look at many professional firefighters - especially in the US - some are quite large and any poster boy looks the minority had may have been long gone!

Some of the people I have met who have been fit for role have had ordinary physiques. Pigeon chests, a bit of a belly and 40 a day..!

But major obesity can't be good - unless it creates positive boyency!

We have a lifesaver at our local club who looks a similar build to the guy in the picture, and there are a few others I'd classify as overweight or obese, although the vast majority are normal weight. These people, as pointed out by 4500 Times, are volunteers who give up hours of their time to train, qualify and be on roster for public safety. They have to be able to pass tough tests to qualify as lifesavers. Even the parents who volunteer for water safety during the kids' session each week have to pass tests.

I'd be happy for an overweight/obese lifesaver pull me or my children to safety. I have also wondered if fat aids buoyency and also if a larger body can build up a momentum of speed that helps with churning through the water. It is better for overall health and wellbeing to be in the normal weight range, but it's tougher for some people than others.

I don't give flying f*** what size he is, if he wears the hat he is good to go.

When you are about to go under for the third and final time I don't think you will be thinking that the chap/chapess who pulls you from a water grave was left alone in a pie shop.

Some of my nursing colleagues are of similiar size to this lifeguard, but the parents don't complain when they are resuscitating their child in the intensive care unit, perhaps not as physically demanding but hopefully same result.

Quite. Unfortunately a lot of people judge others by appearance, without knowing the full story. I sometimes wonder if there is more understanding and support for smokers than fat people:unsure:.

I don't think any one has said they'd care about the size of the guard or who'd be out there to save them, just questioning the ability to run across the beach in a reasonable time to be able to save the life...

Fat people can run. Usually fatter people have a much higher metabolism than slimmer and larger muscle mass, which they've got by carrying much more weight.

Anyway, if he was coming to get me in a shark attack, I'd be glad for his presence. The shark might bow out down to the presence of stiff competition.

Incidentally, during an interview, I once asked an extremely obese interviewer if the company kept a 'keep fit' programme. I didn't get the job.
