I took this pic at Palm Beach, NSW (aka Summer Bay!). Not what normally springs to mind when I think of Aussie lifeguards... c'mon, the guys got serious moobs! How can you be that out of shape and still be able to save lives??

Perhaps that guy is providing assistance, but might not be required to hop into the water. Every pair of eyes on the surf helps. He's just as valuable as, er., the guys sitting down in the deckchairs

No, I used to be involved in surf lifesaving and they won't let you wear any kind of cap unless you have qualified to do so. This chubby will have had to to a swimming test and run swim run plus learned and passed first aid courses ad well as rescue courses.

I'm pretty fit and thought the physical tests would be easy, they weren't (for me anyway).
