Sounds good, might have to get that one. Bought one book so far, well Bernie bought it as a demonstration, so I need to get some practice in at using it!

I'm a bit confused (no change there, then...). I am thinking of getting the DX - I think it's called - which has a bigger screen that I can actually see. The Amazon site says I have to get it from a "different" part of the site since I am in Australia, but reading some of the above I get the impression that you can just order one from the US and get it sent.

What are the differences between the US and "Australian" orders? Is the connectivity different? Or the ability to download certain books?

Have a read of the trhead I linked to in my post above, post #5 Loads of info in that thread about the Us/Aus/UK thing, helped me make sense of it, though i will be interested to see how mine reacts when I get it to Aus. Downloads and connects fine in England though, which is a good start!

It is ordered from Amazon US but they have two 'shops' for it - the US shop and the "International" shop - You need the international shop which lets you enter Australia as your country of origin.

Thats the page either that or it'll snaffle your credit card details to my czhec hacker friends...

Volcano about to erupt but in Indonesia not Iceland so don't think you'll get any extra reading time.

Yes, I've kept up with that - and this - thread which is probably why I'm confused!

There do seem to be many differing ideas as to how you can access US books depending on where you get the thing.

And the $2 charge for downloading outside the US - how do they charge that? I don't fancy putting credit card details in every time I buy.

The other thing of course will be battery life, and no-one yet knows how that will pan out. If you have to return it to the country where it was bought it wouldn't be all that friendly!

I will look forward to hearing how yours works out when you return. Incidentally, where did you buy it?

Where you buy the device is irrelevant - its where your Amazon.COM account is registered (or rather - where your registered Address says you live in your amazon.com account) to access US Store you change your address in your amazon account to a US one, and thats it. Swap it back after buying.

The 2$ Fee is included in the price of books in Australia if you are registered as an australian user (see above) or if you use US store to download via 3g in roaming around the world the book will be X$ + 2$ - It is all charged to your amazon account ( You enter your payment details once in your amazon account)

Battery life - yes its not replaceable but they reckon 3-5 years depending on how you use it before its holding 30-50% of its charge ( that is still 9 days -> 15 days of life !). This is not one of those batteries that you have to let fully drain and fully charge - you can top it up whenever you are able to.

In 3 years someone will have invented an e-reader that implants behind your eyeball and makes you think you are drinking a latte whilst reading so you wont worry about your kindle, your grandkids will be playing with it.

Bought mine with an Aus registered Amazon account, but it was delivered to an address in London. When I went into my Amazon kindle account after buying the actual kindle it gave me the chance to change it to the UK to download here, and did say that if I wanted to change country in future I could do so..... I'll be back in Aus at some point in the next two weeks, so we shall see when happens then.......

One pitfall I've found is that is it is seriously easy/dangerous to buy books, which culminated in me buying two books inadvertently last night, which I am now awaiting a refund for. It's the combination of one-click payment and the first button that is focused when you view book information is the "Buy" button. I actually did want one of the books, but just not at that point, which means I've got to wait for the refund cycle to complete (3-5 days) before I can attempt to buy it again.

Apart from that, very impressed.
