Kindle

True, but all I want is somewhere compact and bijoux to store a multitude of ebooks, which I like to have to hand when I am at work (not feasible with my current collection)...

I have the Kobo - the one promoted by Borders. It's okay and only cost $199 - although I believe it's now cheaper. I have discovered some that books that Amazon sell for the Kindle are not available for Kobo - and vice versa. They can be converted to work but it's a hassle.
I think Kindle is the way to go for reading novels and an ipad or other slate-type computer for reading magazines and books with lots of graphics/pictures.

I am not looking forward to researching which to buy. I still remember it took ages choosing a video player, but I think the research pays off.

I ordered mine Fri and it arrived Wed and that was after a delay as it was sent to the wrong carrier.............it is fab, I love it!
It is simplicity itself to use - I have the wi-fi only version too, typed in the wep and it was good to go. I only turn on wi-fi to download and then I switch it off to save battery life, if you are using it merely as a reading tool there is no reason to keep wi-fi on anyway? All the books I've downloaded have taken 30 odd seconds from ordering via one-click to downoad, impressive. I'm currently sampling a few books which is another great feature, sort of like standing in Smiths at lunchtime and reading the 1st chapter of a book but without the guilt! Reading in bright sunshine is a pleasure, I found the brightest sunniest part of the garden to read it in, held it at various angles and it passed with flying colurs.Text to speech is a bit crummy, it's like having Stephen Hawking read to you but then I was never a fan of speaking books so not a big deal.
You will love

I just stick to the iPhone and multi choice book readers plus all the other whistles and bells. I'd rather have multi use than just one thing.

In our household we have ipod touches, iphones, ipad, and a kindle.
The Kindle for reading wins hands down.
- battery life means it is always available
- browsing wireless amazon (ive got 3g) means you can see a book in a airport bookstore and buy it on kindle for <50% in 30seconds and be reading it within a minute.
- it is small but sturdy and in the leather case i dont mind chucking it around hte car, briefcases, etc ,
- it looks like a slim filofax when yo walk around with it so taking it to a doctors appointment or somewhere you are going to be waiting and want to read is no problem.
- the screen quality is *unbelievable*
- compared to other e-readers I looked at the kindle is much better form factor, has a better screen, is faster to do page turns (you dont notice it - but on other devices you certainly do)
- I subscribe to newspapers whichi because of 3g are on the device when i wake up in morning
Ipad - is brilliant for reading high glossy full scan images of magazines/newspapers, and of course books but... Its 3x the price, has 10hrs instead of 30days battery life, is heavier, fragile, and expensive - lose an ipad at the coffee shop and cry eyes out for long time lose kindle - just cry a bit. Screen is rubbish in sunlight , the device is large and heavy and fairly 'indiscrete' if sat in a coffee shop or a drs surgery etc and you cant hold it in one hand.
Ipod- is good for reading a tiny bit, the screen is so small , the kindle app syncs the current page you are on in each device so you rae always at the right page.
Get a kindle you really wont regret it they are fabulous book devices.
the only thing you lose is the snob factor of having a decent book cover on your coffee table :-)

However if you are a serious reader it stands heads and shoulders above anything that can multi task.

I am a serious reader but have found reading off the iPhone quite easy and cost effective as well as it being a lot easier to carry 5" x 3" x 1/2" in your pocket.
