Re: Homesickness
I get "familiarity sickness" every now and then - never overwhelming, never enough to make me want to go back to the UK. I guess I feel a bit sad when I realise that we will never have the same history with all the new people we meet as we did with our old friends ie weddings, birth of kids, that sort of stuff. It is however balanced with the knowledge that my murky past will never be known

Re: Homesickness
i cant remember his exact words, but it went something like......
make sure you bring the kids out here at the start of school term.
and if they dont settle quickly, move them schools.
it was better than that, but its what he meant.
i have passed this on to loads of expats whos kids are struggling and it has worked every time for them.
so well done walla for not just being a numptie

Re: Homesickness
Home is where the heart is...For some, like us leave their hearts in the UK. Glad to have the Aussie experience thought!!!

Re: Homesickness
there are some though that once they feel unhappy that's it and they are determined that they won't be happy and will find fault with everything about their new life. they stick out on here like dogs knackers and all their posts complain about some aspect of life here. It isn't easy, not everyone settles but it takes commitment and effort and even then for some the pull of home is just too strong.

Re: Homesickness
Homesickness is a lottery IMHO. You either get it or you don't and those who get it have my sympathy.
I was the last person I thought would get it but these things happen.

However I find that if you mention you are homesick or there's something you - heaven forbid - don't like about life in Aus (why did speeding cops just spring to mind LOL?!!), then you get leapt on by the regulars on here as though you are some kind of compulsive whinger/ingrate. (BTW I'm not aiming this at you NB).
I've been here 7 years and get regular bouts of homesickness - whoever said they wouldn't wish it up their own worst enemy was spot on. There's no rhyme or reason to it, so those who haven't suffered - be grateful! A little more understanding from some posters wouldn't go amiss (bit like that 'fat people' thread I have just been reading).
