thats why most of the gear you can buy in bunnings inc some light fittings come with plug tops on so they can be "fitted" read plugged in by your average diy er ( some roof spaces have sockets wired via light switches for just this reason )
Blimey. I basically rewired my house in the UK!

How would anyone know if you just replaced a like for like light/ socket?

It just means if your house burns down and you admit it then you are not insured.

I havent noticed anyone watching the houses yet to immediately arrest anyone

Aussies though, as a rule, don't. This is because they are used to it

Are you allowed to do other DIY without a licence? E.g. putting in new skirting board? Or is this considered too dangerous?

Unofficially - no - you cant. If you do, the registered tradesmen come around and tell you your house will fall down. Then you get worried because you know nothing about termites so wonder whether your thinking you know it all will cause your house to be eaten

I am in process of renovating a shed - and you will not believe the dramas

Go back to vaue of work, at beg of thread, thats if your in qld, each state has its own regs, rules, red tape.....

Learn the regs too say your puttering along and putting a a simple little deck on a house and dont know the termite regulations, you could stuff up sombodies house warranty.

DIY on your own house, you still need to check whats legal, for when you come to sell. Or if you ever need to claim on your insurance, got the proper paperwork for who did that Sir?

No its not but on the other hand termites love damp. Termites where I live are a big problem, they come in and they can eat the inside of your house out without you even realising.

The weather is humid. some benny with a B&Q toolset comes along and starts swapping sinks, wiring up his plugs, adding a little deck and putting on a rain water tank. Then something happens and the mortgage company end up repossessing a shell. Or another buyer comes along and buys a heap of junk the termites have eaten.

I know lots and lots of inept diy'ers who think they're the business in the uk. Fortunately here you dont have to worry quite as much when you buy a house. Pity most of the houses I can afford are thrown up out of fibro anyway and have 3ml glass in the windows

I'm glad you posted that link... I was thinking the same thing myself when I saw that.

I love that you can see "clueless" in the thread link. Pretty much sums it up
