It's not just a school holiday thing if it's a second offence within 12mths.
Double Demerit Points
Double demerit points apply in Queensland to drivers and motorbike riders who commit more than one of the following offences within a 12 month period:
Penalty sets (km/h over speed limit) First offence Second offence (within a year)
21 - 30 km/h over 4 points A$250 for first offence but for second offence of 21-30Km/h over with in 12 mths 8 points plus the A$250 so license won't last long.
The additional demerit points apply to any subsequent offence committed within 12 months of a previous offence. Where a driver/rider commits more than one of these offences within a 12 month period, they will accumulate double the amount of demerit points on their traffic history for the subsequent offence. The number of demerit points that will apply will be dependent upon the subsequent offence
The additional demerit point penalty is activated if a person receives a subsequent offence for speeding more than 20 km/h within 12 months of the first offence. The additional points are applied in line with the second offence.
Current penalties for speeding
Less than 13 km/h over the speed limit:
A$100 + 1 demerit point.
At least 13 km/h but not more than 20 km/h over the speed limit:
A$150 + 3 demerit points.
More than 20 km/h but not more than 30 km/h over the speed limit:
A$250 + 4 demerit points.
More than 30 km/h but not more than 40 km/h over the speed limit:
A$350 + 6 demerit points.
More than 40 km/h over the speed limit:
A$700 + 8 demerit points and 6 month suspension.

I didn't know anything about those double demerits, it used to be double demerit points for any offence during public holiday weekends [not sure whether this applied during school holidays as well].
I searched the QLD site for anything about the public holiday double demerits and found nothing so maybe it's no longer on the books replaced by the double bubble for repeat offenders one

Some of can't help it the foot just takes over...
.
I have heard them mention the holiday thing but this other thing is just to make sure you get in big trouble all year real quick...was watching road and traffic and going with general flow today and realised I had accidently gone from 60 to 80 as the baby car doesn't have cruise and neither does my foot just to pass a one of those non hiding policemen as I was slowing who happened to be be the other side of 6 large Eucalyptus trees (but he wasn't hiding), so will have to do the wait and see... the ironic thing is if I hadn't slowed and had continued doing 80 like the five cars in front he probably wouldn't have been able to see my number plate by slowing I've probably shown it...F#@K...

I will admit I regularly drove between 90 and 95 on the M1 between Northampton and Sheffield South. Just was lucky to not get caught!!!!
Take care out there, and have your wits about you, make sure you see them first.

Just because they haven't been caught doesn't mean they don't speed.
