If not, then it is a tax. JTL It is an employer contribution, in the same way as the employer NI contribution is the UK, and no one includes that in an individual income figure. your employer has to pay 9% super contributions for you in addition to your salary or wages. http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/pa...69#001_002_064 |

From the day I started earning a wage I always assumed 33% of it would go in tax in some form or another. So even as a glass washer, a waiter, a postman, and now an IT consultant, I can look at my Gross wage, subtract 33% and I know what my Net wage will be.
They can call it National Insurance in the UK, or Super in Oz, or whatever in the Republic of Ireland, or now they can call it a levy, but it always comes to 33% of my Gross pay, regardless of whether I'm working in a coleslaw factory or head of an IT team. They have obviously figured out that 33% is the breaking point of the proletariat.;). If it goes to 34%, the revolution begins! JTL I work on around 26%...always seems to be about that in Australia. Obviously salary dependent. |
Re: Flood Levy
Others use it for tax avoidance.

Yes but they also manage the books far better than a Labor or left wing govt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...idential_terms In Canada we had surplus budgets for 10 consecutive years (the first 9 of those under the Liberals - not like your Liberals - think more along the lines of US Democrats) until 2008. Since then, under a Conservative government, Canada has been in deficit. In 2010 we had a record $55.9 billion federal deficit. For 2011 the shortfall is expected to narrow to $45.4 billion. Our Conservative government says the budget will return to balance by 2015. Doesn't quite fit your theory about who around the world manages the books well does it? But don't let the facts get in your way now. |

Not disputing your facts, as I can't think of anything more boring than a discussion about Canadian politics, but couldn't that deficit since 2008, have more to do with a little financial problem in the markets, than it does with which party was in power?
By the sounds of things it looks like they are doing a good job at reducing the deficit and hence managing the books quite well. |

Remind me - is this the same Queensland that, with WA, have been objecting to sharing the mining proceeds with the rest of the country? Surely not................. |

Do we have a QLD tax or disaster area tax?

Re: Flood Levy
And today the libs are asking for donations to fight the tax. I suspect the sender of that request is getting a roasting.
