The problem was that the red cedar double hung windows had a lot of architrave around them so I guess it was hard to know what was behind it or how big the gap was. I agree it is not something we have done wrong, but the fault of the bloke who took the measurements- trouble is that the plasterer is independent of the firm, just subcontracted to them, and they don't cover his installation fees up front as they never know exactly how long the job will take. We may go back to the firm and haggle for a reduction if the extras are horrendous.

Well, apart from fitting the flyscreens and fixing the damaged window, the other windows are all plastered. Luckily it was a very hot day yesterday, so the plaster went off very quickly, making up the time Harry lost packing out all the windows. He was a pretty happy bunny at not having to come back for a third day in a row. hopefully his bill won't have escalated too much, though I expect a bit extra for all the extra materials he had to use.
Meanwhile, I'm still trying to clean up.......
The finished plastering looks really good. This weekend OH is going to seal and prime the walls ready for painting.

They don't seem to have heard of double glazing in W.A. Give it 30 years and they might catch up.

TBH I didn't think the price quoted earlier in the thread was that bad, given the size of windows here compared to the UK, and knowing how much it costs in the UK to do.

And don't forget that included flyscreens and internal venetians to 6 of the windows. (Not that they have fitted the flyscreens yet.)

Yep - not bad at all. Not sure what the cost is when getting replacements for existing windows though. I drive past a place that does double and triple glazing on my way to work, but not stopped to find out what prices are like. I have heard that some of the new builds though are having DG fitted as standard - how true that is I can't say as heard it in work.

I hadn't seen that cost but even then 3 windows are floor to ceiling, 4 other windows, fly screens and blinds $22k isn't that bad - and the other price in this thread is $7k more for new DG instead of single for 16 windows. I would guess that the prices by Anglican, Everest, Staybrite, etc would all be more expensive.

Well I guess we have very different ideas of what is reasonable. I could have custom made bespoke hardwood windows made for a fraction of that price. I can only assume as it is still almost a novelty in Australia companies are cashing in, big time. Prices will eventually have to drop considerably for it to become mainstream.

I took out custom made red cedar windows because they were being eaten by the cockatoos, and also because they had no insulating or noise reducing properties at all, would run with condensation in the winter and then go mouldy. They were a pain to maintain too. Most of my windows are at least 2 metres wide and floor to ceiling. There are 4 venetians per window, which fit between the 2 panes of glass- so no dusting!! There are at least 12 opening sections which will have retractable flyscreens. Yes, they are more expensive than the UK, and we won't recoup the money in lower electricity bills, but the difference they have already made is priceless.
