Nicely done! how long ago did you start learning? Are you designer and developer or one or the other. I saw a website you did in a previous page, top stuff
Started learning in July 07 so I'm really new to it all but I've been putting in ridiculously long hours learning and researching - basically I need to contribute to the family income some way and this seems to be the best option - the fact that I absolutely LOVE doing it helps too :) Just doing designing at the moment but considering doing more courses :) |

I missed this reply yesterday Ste :)
Thanks again for all your help - as yet I'm still waiting to hear back from my mate in the UK whos site it is - I've emailed 1and1 but no response as yet -god they're good!! Thanks for the temp hosting - much appreciated! Chat soon :) Oh and I just found out something about alt and title tags for images. I knew that the alt tags for images didn't show on hover on Mozilla but it did in IE - well.......when you add a title tag too it works in Mozilla :) So......alt tags for IE and title tags for Mozilla - strange.......but true :) (you prob already knew that though!!) and if you right click images in FF the attributes are listed, so this can help in SEO, as the more relevant a page is indexed the better. A prime example of page relevancy is: http://www.realestate.com.au/ Check out page structure, links at bottom of page, content, metas, title tags, and headers. Thats really what you should be striving for. Our flooring website in uk, has been page 1 on google and listed top 5 for about 100 keywords for the last 5 years. And its the crappiest site ever !! A trick or two is, to get a google sitemap, and submit it to google. Create a robots.txt file, so that you can add filtering to spiders. Get on smaller engines such as Addme etc. And do free site submission, Jayde are quite powerful. Obviously the big guys are: Inktomi, Google, Msn, Ask, etc etc.. Quite hard to get in some, but its dooable. I try wherever possible to spend 1-2 hrs per week, adding our sites to search engines. ( mind you I only ever add our commercial stuff ) The rest are generally picked up, on routine sweeps. Ste |

They'd need to look at getting ecommerce software (you can buy it online) and then I'd be able to work around that :)

They could also use a CMS such as Drupal, Xoops or Joomla that have e-commerce plugins. These packages allow total control over your site and there are thousands of modules and plugins to enhance the functionality. It's not a huge task to build a tailor-made store from scratch but there are numerous Open Source (free) solutions out there that can be adapted to their requirements but unless they are experts, I wouldn't suggest attempting to build it themselves with a WYSIWYG site builder. If it's for a business that wants to be taken seriously, I would advise they have it done professionally and shop around for quotes before committing. |
