Just watching Johnson bowl for the first time - been on odd shifts so this is the first chance I've had to see him. Could still be dangerous, couldn't he....

He could be....... but he needs to bowl to English conditions. To be fair he's actually bowled well without much luck. In contrast to Starc who probably got the worlds worst 5 for.

As a neutral and it surprises me to say this but I think that overall, England look like the better side (granted it is very early in the series)

Broad and Anderson are definitely bowling better than in recent times and in Ali England have a genuine all-rounder who is also an athletic fielder (something that Panesar never was). England have some excellent young players

Australia look a bit rusty to me. HTF is Watson still getting a gig? And although Haddin is still a good wickie, his batting looks average. Johnson has looked ordinary and Starc and Lyon are carrying the bowling

If England don't win this one (rain not included) then they don't deserve to win anything

Totally agree. It looks like Australia haven't prepared. They don't appear to have any stategies. Clarkes field placings have been strange at best. Watson move on. England definately playing the better cricket.

I agree with Zulu's assessment; tests vs Windies and arriving a few weeks before not the best preparation but that's modern cricket and scheduling. I also agree that this is England's best chance but I bet they wanted more of a lead which they looked like getting when Root and Bell were in - good comeback by Australian bowlers from there. It will be an interesting day. Not quite so sure on Broad - was wicketless for a long time and only really bowled well in the morning to the tail. Cook - damaged goods; that's 12 consecutive failures against Australia.

I'd also add that Sophia Gardens (or Swalec Stadium if you prefer) is not up to scratch as a venue for an Ashes test - both low capacity and dodgy wicket. I have been there a few times on playing and coaching duties for 4 nations tennis and it is a wonderful setting by the river and all that. We had a few fantastic civic receptions in Cardiff Castle and stayed down by the new waterfront but test cricket venue, like Durham, no.
