Ahm, just reading the above about shipping your effects out without a residential visa. According to Oz Customs if you have a visa you are allowed to import used household goods free of duty. If you have not got a visa then you may have to pay duty on the value!!!!!!!!! I looked into this when I was out the last time re buying a new house and furnishing it. To quote
??????????????????????????????????????????
I do not know what type of visa you have, if you are on a tourist visa this does not qualify you as a first time migrant or returning resident. You need to provide a detailed packing list to assist in the clearance of your goods, if you have insured your goods you may have made a detailed list to help assess their value. Each case would be looked at individually. If you have any receipts you could provide these to help assess the value as well.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this helps

I don't know the payment request details for the 2nd VAC yet, waiting to hear. If my family were allowed to hand over a cheque to Dimia, I could transfer the $'s for the 2nd VAC into their account ready.

Days busy searching threads for best removals Nico, always having to keep the house ready for viewings (grim when they cancel last minute) plenty of interest now but at least 4 possibles that have to sell their property first so no go as yet, I think the year 2006 will haunt me forever as the most stressful ever.
Keep our thread going everyone
Nice to support one another,

Hi Carol and the rest of the CP gang.
Well we have our meds booked for Thursday this week and are just chugging along quietly, still keeping our fingers and toes crossed that all will be well. In the meantime, can anyone give us any advice or recommend a Financial Advisor who specialises in Emigration matters. It all seems so complicated re the transfer of funds etc and the tax situation. Have you opened accounts already in Oz ready for transfer of funds? Also how are you dealing the shipping issue - we have had one quote so far and Pickfords are supposed to be coming on Friday (they have changed the date twice already??? - so feeling a bit dubious there!!). Are you taking all your furniture etc or buying new in Oz? Keep getting conflicting advice from friends and family - some say buy new out there and some say take all that you can - so.....?

We have been very lucky re the sale of our house - have had an offer for full asking price from a local farmer who is prepared to delay completion til we have our visa!!! Things are moving along quietly there but at least that anxiety is partway solved. I think you are right Carol, the year 2006 is certainly going to go down as the most stressful so far!!! but we are strong eh? and it will all be worth it in the end. Regards to all, Linda

Just arranging to send the AOS bond money over to my Brother in Law so that he can get off the mark quickly in anticipation of requests for AOS interviews. I am also arranging more up to date PCC's as the original ones expire early Dec! Sigh, when I made the application it was only 9 months to completion then!!!
I am also interested in the timescales and means of payment of the visa fees so that I can anticipate and transfer funds in good time.
Big surprise the other day when an architect telephoned from Oz to ask if I was interested in his next phase of a small house development near Manly. Sounds promising, so it could all work out just right moneywise and timewise. Xmas in Sydney?
Well that might be pushing it.
Hi Derek

Re the housing development. If you are thinking of buying off plan would you like me to check out the area of the proposed development when we are next over in Manly Vale - could maybe take some digital pics also. No developer tells you what is next door or over the back fence

I don't particularly want to part with the vast amount but a couple of weeks have now passed by and no word as yet. Are you going to tell me that another long wait is ahead???
Is there any advice you can offer on suggested ways to pay ie: does it have to be by bankers draft? My credit-card company will not accept payment of that amount of loading, is there any other route it can be paid by sending funds to Aus family account for them to pay for instance, any advice welcome.
Do we receive notice to pay by letter or e-mail and when do we actually get to know our validation date for entry?
The Commonwealth bank does make a charge to lodge this visa since July 2004 according to my CO, my daughter had the out-dated info.
Any other news from anyone yet?
Carol
Hello Carol

All our major communications from POPC were by letter, not Email

You should be hearing very shortly now about paying the 2nd VAC - perhaps this part is also taking slightly longer than it did when we were going through the system (ie more applications to deal with).

From (distant) memory re the 2nd VAC - we bought the Australian dollars (through HIFX) and transferred them to our son's account out here. He made the payment by bank transfer (to the CBA?) and as soon as POPC had got round to confirming the receipt of the funds, the visa was issued about 1 week later. The visa grant letter will give you the date by which you must first enter Australia which for us was 12 months to the day from our medical examinations (now you know why they say don't do your medicals until asked for!)

As for transferring funds, we initially thought about our CC company but soon ducked out of that when we read the small print in our CC contract stating they charge 2.75% for this privilege which, for house proceeds and 2nd VAC, was an appreciable amount to lose.

Since we have been over here we have been using Tranzfers (OzForex) and doing online transfers - as you will have read on previous threads it is a dead easy procedure - and the charges are lower (and sometimes Nil)

Keep - its on the way !

Jim

Good luck for Thurs meds Linda, a big relief once its over with. I have only been reading removal threads so far, not had any quotes, as far as shipping
goes, all my husbands business tools and equipment are to be shipped along with household stuff, not taking much furniture, mostly personal effects. I am getting all statements of pensions/investment together and taking advice after arrival regards transfer. You are so lucky with your house, well done, yet another viewing yesterday cancelled last minute, so fed up with the keep tidy bit. I am also looking into which bank account to open, nothing done as yet. Are you and your OH intending on working in Aus or retiring?

TO JIM,
Thanks so much for your advice, having read the thread from Loz I have a fair bit of waiting to do yet, will let you know when I hear anything further and then will be able to put the timeline into perspective to help the other CP's in their wait. I will take note of Tranzfers, many thanks once more.
Kind regards,
Carol

I spoke to the DIMIA yesterday as we are looking into this for mum and dad and they told me that I have to inform our CO or POPC in writing so that our file gets sent to the New Zealand embassy , also you need to inform them that you have a change of address that you will have a tourist visa for Aus also and then they will inform you when they are going to grant so that you can leave Aus so they can grant it. It does say in booklet 3 that you must use form 1022 to inform of any changes.Maybe you should consider phoning POPC and asking or DIMIA in Aus !!

Although this may seem like a hassel to do it is better to be on the safe side for the sake of a phone call !

Hope this helps

Martin

Hi Carol, feel frustrated for you re sale of your house! Can't believe how many "time-wasters" there are out there! I am sure it will sell eventually but it is very frustrating for you in the meantime. Our daughter-in-law's parents are in a similar situation. They have their visa already but just can't sell their house in Kent! Thought it would be snapped up as it is really nice but nothing is happening for them. In answer to your query - we are retiring to Oz! My OH took an early retirement/redundancy package six years ago when we came to Devon (which was going to be our last move!!! ha ha). Never dreamt that we would be contemplating moving to the other side of the world!!! Can't wait now to get there - though it is going to be difficult leaving our daughter (we are hoping that she will follow eventually) who lives in Kent and works in London in Shipping.

How about you - what are your plans? Retirement or working?
Whatever - not long now for you eh? Soon be there!! Regards Linda

hi everyone
i haven't really got any new news but just thought i would ask a really basic question. the first payment isn't the same as assurance is it? i keep reading about getting money out to relatives to pay etc and getting very confused now. i thought that the first payment would be asked for and we would just pay it!!!!! then the asssurance is needed to be paid for by the assurers (of course we will send this money over) i know that as we are going on the temporary visa our assurance isn't asked for until we go for the permanant visa but just wanted to clarify if we do pay the first payment from here or not? sorry about this but, i got some good advice before about the assurer not needing to be the sponsor and know i will get some response from someone. keeping my fingers crossed for you who are soooooo close to it now.

Hello Jim
Many thanks for your offer to help above, my sister who lives in Clareville is meeting the developer on Sat to discuss his plans with him. I dont hold out much hope as he appears to have revised his prices.............upwards! If anything seems promising in this development I may ask for a look at the neighbourhood as its fairly close, well a few streets away from Brookvale Oval so I wonder what its like on matchdays? Not my most preferred location but it is in the Northern Beaches area so would be close to rellies and at the time of talking last April affordable!!
Thanks
Derek
ps re your trip to Thailand with jetstar, have heard that jetstar are, well leave something to be desired and that VB are streets ahead.

Hello Derek

No worries - just let me know if I can help.

Ah, Brookvale Oval - you're right - not a preferred location right by 6 lanes of mega-traffic - but just off should be OK.

Re Jetstar and Virgin Blue - haven't flown with either yet although I would imagine that Branson's lot do have the edge. Never been impressed with Quaintas and this new Jetstar international thing is also causing a lot of friction re flight crews, salaries etc.

We just couldn't pass up the opportunity to get into Asia at that price though - just as long as we don't have to take our own elastic bands as well as our own sandwiches!

Who knows - it might all have collapsed by next June!

Regards

Jim
