Definitely ! I'm going tomorrow. I just want to say how lovely it has been to deal with DIAC at the airport last night and going out and on the phone today.
Real professionals after the horror of dealing with the completely unprofessional behaviour of Cathay. According to all my talks with DIAC there is no problem just a formality of getting my paperwork updated.
Thanks to everyone here too for all the info as I wasn't aware of all these details. I was just waiting to get my citizenship but now with me getting a new UK passport and this visa expiring they say I will have to get the visa situation resolved before I can get citizenship as its wonked the whole system

Nothing like wonking the system;)

Glad to hear that your mum ok now. Have you made a formal complaint to Cathay?

Not yet. Working on it. I'm just trying to figure out how we'll get her home first

Well Well Well. Went to DIAC today and talked to a lovely lady from West London. she immediately put my mind at ease as we reminisced about sunday walks in Bushey park or along the Thames or a pint of real ale overlooking Sunbury Lock. She even tried to talk me out of being arsed to renew at this moment as I only needed it if I was travelling. The theory is the permanent residence visa is well - permanent. But once you leave the country it wont let you back in after five years so you're stuffed. But there will be no jackboots at your door in Australia on a Tuesday night. I was having none of the "chillax" routine after my recent adventures so I told her I'd like to "Bank" the reentry visa and worry about citizenship at my leisure. She proceeded to start my application and just as the nice lady o the phone had said - she realised there were no address details or anything on my record. Then some weird message appeared. I love it when I'm dealing with my future and people jump back from computer screens and say "Whoa ! WTF ?!" and run off to the back office. I've even had a pilot do it taking off from Perth once where he came on after lift off and said "Whoa ! WTF? We just got hit by the biggest wind sheer ever. Way over the known limits of this particular model. But I guess shit happens for a reason so I'll find a clean pair of pants and drive this sucker to Melbourne. Have a nice flight"
Anyway the nice Pommie comes back and says you're all set but you've been yellow carded for trying to enter the country without a visa so you cant apply for citizenship for another year. Now that was better than being flown half way around the world and being dragged off a plane and dumped in a skip in a strange city so I happily paid $260 and went back to my wife and kids for 5 more years.

Read the thread through and TBH not sure you have any real grounds for complaint. If I had tried to open a door mid flight and was not allowed to fly on to my end destination then I would consider it my problem not the airlines. If you are saying that this is different because your mother is vulnerable then I would ask why were you letting her fly from Canda to Australia by herself in the first place. Can't have it both ways really.

And price of tickets goes up and down and maybe demand forced the price up at the last minute. You said something about "tentatively" booking a ticket, not quite sure what that means but if I needed to fly next day I wouldn't be "tentatively" booking.

For a quiet life, maybe Cathay Pacific will send you a nice letter but I honestly didn't read anything that made me think they behaved like scumbags.

I agree...I'm just not seeing it.

The HKD27k fare is the full economy Y class fare for a HKG-PER return. It's a perfectly normal situation to be confronted with that for a last minute (non-tentative) booking depending on the load factor. Doesn't seem like profiteering, rather the person trying to make the booking being treated like anyone else.

All I'm saying is I would get better customer service from my local drug dealer.
My mate who travels the world with them on business was standing in front of them trying to get on the flight leaving in thirty mins. He had been there all night trying to get a straight answer out of them about when they would let my 76 year old mother and him on the flight. They are so incompetent they couldn't get someone to explain what had to be done. All they could do was get poor ticket agents punch in stuff in computer and 'Computer says no" Meanwhile they are calling me in australia, my brother in Calgary and My sister in London with completely useless and different info. "Come get your mother in HK or we'll call the Canadian commission" The commission was closed for the weekend. As they are shaking my friend down for ever increasing fares by the minute I was able to go online and book a fare for myself which was half what they were demanding him.
You can say what you want about procedure, security etc but I was there eventually and I'm quite sure we will prove that she wasn't a security threat and a bit of customer service would have sorted the whole thing out and kept a lot of customers happy and Cathay happy.
Once again contrast this with DIAC who have the same stresses and security issues (If not more). I dealt with them at the airport going out, at HK where they cleared me to fly at Perth airport on arrival and the next day at their offices getting my visa sorted out. Absolute stress free professionalism and courteous service.
