Cathay Pacific are absolute Scumbags
My 76 year old mother is flying over from Toronto stopped in Hong Kong and they refused to let her contiinue without an escort as she has slight confusion due to her age. Luckily my friend is there now and has offered to accompany her. Now are making him pay for this ! Tey have upped the price from $7000 HKD yesterday to $26000 HKD today.
This is crazy and extortonate they just dont care about leaving a 76 year old woman dangling. Now thay ave called me and said if they dont pay they will just leave her alone at the airport ? Does anyone have advice about our rights |

So what reason have they given you for not letting her board the flight from HKG? What happened on the flight from Toronto or at the airport in HKG?
If you can provide more detail you might get a better answer by posting here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/catha...sia-miles-487/ They sent her to the hospital and the doctor cleared her for travel but they are insisting I have to accompany her. |

She was just confused on the flight. They claim she tried to open the door which is highly improbable she would never find it or exhibit those behaviours.

I'm sure the little old lady with delirium I was looking after last week doesnt usually try and wallop nurses... And no doubt her family would find it hard to accept that she exhibited those behaviours... Luckily we were able to call security to help protect us and her.... She was "just confused" too... Likewise our elderly confused gentleman who in his state of increased confusion is like Harry Houdini... Most of the time he is lucid and rational, but when he gets his moments he is a risk... Being medically cleared for flying isnt the same as being safe to fly on her own... The airline wont provide a "special" to sit with her and reassure her and make sure she is safe during a flight... At this moment in time its not so much your rights as your responsibilities... If you can pay the money and get her to safety THEN challenge them when you have time on your side.... Right now you dont .... |
Re: Cathay Pacific are absolute Scumbags
Also, I'm sure that once you have had time to reflect a bit you will be able to realise that an airline has a responsibility to an entire planeful of passengers... And that has to be their priority... And are not "scumbags"

You may have to accept that in the airlines opinion she put other passengers at risk through her actions... Some one suffering from confusion may act in ways that their nearest and dearest dont recognise. How long is it since you saw your mum? has a little confusion become something more serious or were unfamiliar surroundings and the flight some how disorientating for her adding to her symptoms?

I agree with everything you said. Im not disputing that Im disputing they chucked her out in HK with no consideration for her safety
I would expect they are trying to make sure you understand the seriousness of this situation... And lets face it... They are NOT responsible for her. If they will accept her on the plane with you as an escort they are ensuring her safety as well as the rest of the passengers safety.... They aren't obliged to do that if she has done something they consider has put the flight at risk... Try and see it from the other passengers perspective as well as your own. |

You said they took her to the hosiptal to have her assessed... That shows considerable concern for her safety...

Re: Cathay Pacific are absolute Scumbags
When my dad was in his confused state, the anxiety and frustration made him aggressive. He too tried to escape, and when confused, you don't know your own strength.
The airline are being very sensible in asking for her to be accompanied. I agree that the price jump is alarming, but as others have said, you need to get her to where she is meant to be, cough up, then dispute. If she is confused, then leaving her in an unfamiliar place surrounded by strangers is not going to do her any good. Sorry. |
Re: Cathay Pacific are absolute Scumbags
the price escalation is crap and id contest that bit:thumbdown: but to be fair if your mother was confused and acted like they said, then they have to think of all the other passengers not just your mum. It sounds like she needs someone to assist her so its meant for the good mate.

Re: Cathay Pacific are absolute Scumbags
Sorry to hear about your Mum's situation, maybe the confusion on board was caused by dehydration? Older people don't drink enough anyway and with the atmosphere on board would enhance this leading to confusion and maybe even some hallucination. Sounds dramatic by used to happen to my Nan frequently if she got even mildly dehydrated.
I can see if there had been an incident then they have to put the rest of the plane first but the price hike in ticket seems a bit unfair. Equally she can't be left there so try and talk to CX about how to resolve the situation, good luck! |
Re: Cathay Pacific are absolute Scumbags
Would have hoped that the situation had been at least patially resolved by now.. Ie your mum is safe here....
Let us know how she is? Emergency health issues arent fun when they happen under these circumstances and impact financially to boot:( Hope everything turns out ok:fingerscrossed: |
