I did this recently with a Cab Driver here in Melbourne... He had been in Aus 18months, and It didnt bother him He had not learned from his English based Brothers that it was "such" a bad word.
I reckon that one word is where the UK stuffed up race relations. Fancy making an abbreviation a insult... even if there were issues around it at the time. Re bashing etc Talk about digging a hole and burying yourself.
Now it's entrenched in law... Pakistanis are different and there is a law to prove it...... IN Britain. !
As for this thread and the old content.... it's all be done before.
Save for one part.... The Aussies I have a go at dont seem to mind. It's all in the delivery.

But you've said in the past that Abo is an insult, surely that's an abbreviation too? Same stuff up?

The one major difference is theres no law about calling Aborignals, "Abo's" it's left up to personal choice.
Have the Pakistani cricket team ever complained about being called The Paki's by the TV commentators here ? I"ve not heard of one ? Only complaints about this word are from UK people bringing their own belief systems.

Your correct on that one.... All I can give up as an answer is the Aboriginals were here first.... They have right... Plus Abo is not banned by law. Not a great answer but I respect their wishes in this instance. Hypocritical yes. However I stand by my beliefs. Chances are in time, it may become acceptable again, I doubt it but maybe.
