When is going to happen?

I think Australia should become a republic and to be honest I think most British people wouldn't really care.

However, is it really necessary for the article to be such a bitter swipe at the UK? It came across as if the author went on a Contiki tour stayed in London and didn't like it.

What about the massed ranks of pedalo's from Alton Towers and Longleat Zoo, etc and certainly not forgetting those most feared battlecruisers known as the Cambridge and Oxford punts!

The RN is no longer a blue water navy. It is a coastal defence force.

Of course. There are plenty of republics in the Commonwealth.

...and how much backup/entourage would that post start to acquire?.

No more than the PM. It would certainly cost a lot less than paying for the House of Lords.

How much would it be a direct rival to the Prime Minister?.
It wouldn't. The role of president is not a political one.

As for the House of Lords... isn't that still Australia's highest legal court?.
No.
Until 1963, the High Court regarded decisions of the House of Lords binding, and there was substantial uniformity between Australian and English common law.

In 1978, the High Court declared that it was no longer bound by decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the last appeals to the Privy Council were abolished by the Australia Acts of 1986, and there is now a measure of divergence between the two common law systems. Nevertheless, decisions of the High Court and the House of Lords are regularly cited in argument and relied upon in the courts of the other country.

The High Court is the highest court in the Australian judicial system. It was established in 1901 by Section 71 of the Constitution. The functions of the High Court are to interpret and apply the law of Australia; to decide cases of special federal significance including challenges to the constitutional validity of laws and to hear appeals, by special leave, from Federal, State and Territory courts.
