Arrogant Poms

Arrogance as a trait is very severely frowned upon in Australian society and culture and violates societal norms.
It may be more accepted in England, but over here you will quickly make enemies if you are arrogant, or come across as arrogant. The whole 'tall poppy' thing is based around this. People who are over confident in an ungracious way are soon cut down.
This applies to arrogant Australians as well. Many Australian sports people and identities that come across as arrogant are despised here as well. Australians like down to earth people who are on the same level.

I disagree - it may be held up as an Australian fundamental to dislike arrogance but in reality it seems to me the 'average' australian is far more likely to be overconfident and have a high opinion of themselves compared with the relatively self-deprecating British.

Oh I don't know...if this forum is any guide I think "self-deprecating" Brit is just as aspirational as non-arrogant Aussie

Cannot remember, the last time anyone mentioned my origins. In fact the last real hassle I had was re being Victorian up in Port Macquarie... circa 6 years back
My daughter copped negative comments re being an Aussie quite a few times a week in the UK though.
It's a very valid point the Proud Vic makes and one that has cemented my feeling probably more Aussie than Brit these days.. I'd say accepting these points are vital to making one feel at home in Aus and probably the best change in my own personal makeup, I dont mind admitting that when I worked in the Square Mile from 1970 through to 1980 I thought my sheet didnt stink. I can actually tell a tale about getting arrested and the cops defferring to me when they realised what job i had.... They certainly changed their attitude after me filling out a form on my personal details. So that all ties in with the arrogance in my view and the social system that the UK is plagued/stymied with. It could well have changed a lot in the 30 years I've been here though.
There is a big difference between confidence and arrogance... arrogance is a certain knowledge that one is better than anyone else/certain groups... confidence is belief in ones abilities. IMO its far easier to get along with confident people than arrogant.
Re the point over the Arrogant Poms article... not only do I feel that it doesnt apply to me in any way shape or form... I also couldnt give a monkeys about it.

I hate being called a POM. Gives me the shits. However I do delight in giving every Australian that calls me one a brief (hmmmmm.....if you can call an hour or so brief) history lesson on the various origins of the term POM and on how all of them point to the original "POM's" actually being some of the first settlers here and so actually they are more likely to be descendant of the original Pommies than I am as I have only just arrived, and am not descendant of a load of criminal navvie scurvy ridden invaders.
I find that shuts them up. Probably am an arrogant shit so dont have an issue with that bit!

The English brew beer, Australians serve it.
I spent 3 years in Australia, loved it! Had a Wife who hated it! 65 to 68.
Going back to St Helens in Lancashire was not an option, in my mind, so the compromise was Canada, had a Cousin there, couple of years, divorced, both my Children moved to Florida over the years, my second (and last! Wife and I moved also, Dec 2003) Love the USA, but I loved Australia and Canada as well!
Thirty five years with 6 month winters? Ended up in Orlando. I dont think the Brits have a lock on being arrogant, met lots of arrogant every nationalities all over the world.
Loved the laid back life of NSW. Lots of stories from Sydney. See ya later, mate.
