Fantastic isn't it ? Apart from the damage it causes :(

Actually it isn't usually as bad as this so what did you bring in your suitcase that upset the heavens ? ;)

You are really in at the deep end but it's what maintains the rainforest for the rest of the year.....and that you will love.

I brought a brolly  no good in this though I had to paddle through the water yesterday when I got out the car to go into centrelink, it was so funny I guess you had to be there.

I'd hate to sacrafice some clothes to make room for the wellies only to find that id look a dork in wellies cause everyone else wore flippies. My aim in life is to blend in...!

Rarely see wellies used.
Usually barefoot.

Don't your feet get all skanky? Hope water beetles or snakes or anything dont float by...

Seriously, barefoot? thats yucky! i take it its not like uk where everything overflows with the slightest bit of rain. overflowing drainage sewage water - thats bad in wellies, but in barefeet! nooooo.

I don't think im cut out for cairns. the more i read the more im scared and daunted and creeped out. [oh why cant i be happy].

P.S - ive never been camping before (or got dirty on a weekend trip to the country) and im beginning to feel like i should enjoy the outdoors (and goo) more. :(

actually, a lot don't even bother with thongs and just go bare foot!! I so rarely wear proper shoes that it feels really odd when I do!!

The only person I've seen in wellies is my husband ... and no it's not a kinky thing ;) He sometimes has to wear them at work. If packing space is limited I wouldn't bother with your wellies, if you did need them you could always get some here.

Good luck with the move!!

Sometimes I wonder whether civilisation in Australia is going backwards. Considering some of the ways people here present themselves in public, they might as well be wearing loincloths and carrying usefully shaped rocks.

you know I'm not getting a good picture of cairns in my head right now ;)

anyway as some of you know i have been offered a job at cairns base hospital and am just waiting to hear that my references were okay. I still have a couple of interviews lined up for WA and still a little undecided but i think Cairns is still the heart decision.

Can anyone tell me what the job market is like at the moment for my hubby, he will need to do something but is pretty happy to do anything he can get to start with (apart from pack fish he says)

Hi Suzanne

you sound like me a fews months ago I couldnt decide between perth and cairns, but having been to Perth as much as I loved it, Cairns is definitely the right choice for me and for me it was definitely heart v head with cairns being the heart choice

As far as work goes theres been a varied amount of work depends what he does, but I have seen things for drivers, couriers, ship yards have quite a bit of work kicking off, even fruit picking if you fancy, just the other day they were advertising for baggage handlers at the airport. We have only been here 3 weeks and in that time we have seen quite a few things in the paper and on recruitment pages, it really depends on what he fancies doing.

I met someone today from Cheltenham he is living here and is selling Austar (similar to sky TV) in the shopping centre and they are sponsoring him to stay permenantly.

So if he is prepared to give anything a go i'm sure he will find something.

thanks for that, he has said he will give anything a go, he is currently in retail management and i think he would like to get out of that. He did his degree in environmental resource management (encompassed geography, geology, environemental stuff such as sustainan]ble development and biodiverity and waterways management) so i think he would enjoy something related to that

he does have a contact high up at Telstra (boo hiss i know) but he might be able to get something through him

hubby [refers the look of perth but whenever i read stuff about people hating Oz, struggling etc it always seems to be Perth, most people who go to Cairns seem to love it and I can see us loving it too

Well I reckon you should start thinking seriously about whether or not you enjoy the great outdoors. The best bits of Cairns (in my opinion) are the outdoors things.... Lets put it this way, you wouldn't choose cairns for shopping, bars or restaurants. The rainforest in the tablelands, the rivers, the barrier reef, the wildlife everywhere you go...these are all stunning (to some people...not all). If you are not interested in any of this kind of stuff and shopping in M&S is more your thing - then cairns might not be your favourite place.
