We have been researching the area now for about 3 years. We're divorcing the United States...not for family. Americans are working themselves to death and stressed out. We're saving every quarter, nickle, and penny for the move!!!

not condusive to a happy life
Looks like you've got your head screwed on and have seen the light. With your determination, you will make it. Go for it my friend

I am always amazed when people hold up USA as an example regarding work ethics. Whilst USA is at the forefront of a lot of things, best practice in work ethics is not one of them. American colleagues I spoke to have indicated terrible holiday allowance and a fear of losing your job every time you take time off. I understand the politics in business is not for the faint hearted over there

I suppose working 80 hours a week for the mighty American Dollar will do that to anyone. So now, I'm working 30 hours a week and spending more time with my wife and children. What's next? Australia!!!

The reason why the worth ethic is so bad is due to American Greed...We're so greedy as a nation! What really sparked our decision to move was due to me being hospitalized for 7-days last year - The doctor told me, "You're working too hard and the stress nearly killed you...it's your life...make a choice."

Regarding work: I don't want to put a dampener on things but Australia sure aint good at that bit. Australians work harder than anyone, and not always smarter. And it's especially hard when you are trying to get back in the market. It is not unknown to work long hours although granted, weekends are *generally* seen as sacrosanct and family time. Of course it also depends on what kind of work you're in and how interested you are in moving up the ladder. If that's not for you, then you can "cut your cloth accordingly"
I'm glad you are OK and maybe what happened was a wake up call. Who knows, but at least you've taken heed and have decided to make a conscious decision to change your life and your families life for the better. If nothing else you deserve to make the difference for the better. Good onya as they say here in Aus

Greed isn't just an American thing though Tony - it's the materialistic world we live in - only some of us have seen the light

Upon our move to Australia, we plan to live within our means and debt free. We want the simple and quite life. It's great medicine.

Don't get me wrong; I know many Australians are caught in the same trap as Americans. I've climed the ladder and now I'm climbing down...smile. Done with competing against the Materialistic Greedy Ghost and his followers!

Australian house prices have shot up in the last 2 years. Unless you are loaded you will still come up against the same mortgage trap, of course it depends on where you want/need to live. Are you bound for Brisbane?
