I dont remember what they taste like:blink:

If you bought some today it wouldn't help to jog your memory, they seem to be artificially ripening them and that gives them a terrible taste, they are pushing through as many as they can at these silly prices before the market collapses. About time the government allowed imports from the islands, this manipulation of the market is happening too often.

I often used to get tree ripened bananas from my father-in-law, they have a fantastic taste when compared with even the best from any shop.

I read yesterday on another forum, a lady in Queensland found bananas on sale for $2 per kilo in the local market, she asked the farmer who was selling them how he did it, he replied that he was making a reasonable profit and $2 per kilo was more than the supermarkets would pay him.

Well I had breakfast in a beachfront cafe in Terrigal yesterday - the water feature they had brought in specially was amazing but anyway....... I ordered pancakes with bananas, syrup and ice cream (as I always do) - only to be told that they are not doing bananas at the moment as they are too expensive. WTF. You're a cafe FFS. I'm paying you $16 for my freakin pancakes and $5 for a bit of hot water and a crap teabag. Surely there's enough margin in there for half a banana. Pfffffft!:frown::frown::frown:

(and my ice cream didnt turn up - did they give me a discount? No!) Double pfft!

Probably thought they were doing you a favour by not tempting you to eat high fat foods...

And what annoys me further is that these bananas, which are essentially a luxury item with very volatile pricing across a huge price band depending on storms/floods/which way the wind is blowing are steadfastly stuck on the consumer price index for assessing inflation and hence interest rate movements.

Surely less volatile everyday goods should replace them? It only takes bananas to be the victims of a storm and suddenly inflation is off like a rocket...

They must surely monitor the possibility that one, highly volatile, food item is skewing the CPI? What exactly is in the basket - do you know?

No, sadly I don't, though bananas are apparently in it, and often cause a stir in inflation circles...

Doesn't look like it. This from today's SMH:

"Inflation has largely been fuelled by a rise in food prices, exacerbated of late by a severe drought in farming heartlands. Some economists say inflation is also the result of China's massive stimulus during the global financial crisis."
