Talking Whinging Pommy's!!

Hi to all fellow English men/women,

Get a load of this! My partner of 2 years is Australian, i love that fact and I'm very proud of it, i'm as you can probably guess English and also very proud of that fact too!!

I find that some Australian women are very bitchy and even some men, I dont think they like my english accent, but my partners relation was last night talking to him on the phone totally slagging of us english asking him what he saw in an whining pommy girl! totally offending, she has never met me in my life and I have no intentions of meeting her now... VERY narrow minded!!

Anyone else had this?

Which part of Australia are you in?

Not had that myself, seems that the South Australians are a nice friendly bunch.

I don't mind being called a Pom - in fact I often introduce myself as one. I find it's a great ice breaker.

Ditto, its no different to being referred to as a Cockney (even if I am from the wrong side of the river) A Scouser, a Brummy, a Geordie, or a Jock.

So if people that have been here for a decent period of time find it unoffensive, why would someone new to the country find it confronting ?

Pommy is definitely not as offensive as Jafa

Never had any hassles here with my inlaws, they are a nice enough bunch. I have, of course, been referred to as a Pom - less so now that my accent has totally disappeared but, yup, it happens. Usually it is "gentle teasing" and if you react they will just keep on doing it. I agree with the previous poster - Aussies will definitely medal in the whinge olympics!

I agree.

My whinge for this morning is about English born and bred people who don't know how to write in their own language. The apostrophe rules are NOT difficult, nor are those for forming plurals!

Obviously i'm not living there yet but have visited several times. I dislike being called a pom but would much prefer that to what i heard the Italians being called - wog. You'd get arrested for that in the UK.

Some people could argue that if it is written by an English person then it is indeed English whether right or wrong lol

i remember the first time i heard that word in general conversation, i was shocked!!!

BUT actually the "wogs" call themselves it, so i realised that it's not meant as a derogatory term, just how they're described....

that's the thing with names like that: it all depends on the context they're used in as to whether they are offensive or not.
