We have an almost new top loader that the Bloke bought before I got here. Any stains have to be scrubbed first, cos the machine doesn't clean at all. I'm avoiding the original problem of everything having lumps of powder in by using liquid now, but it just doesn't clean stuff. Two shirts consigned to the bin after the paddle thing in the middle tore them.
The thing is a waste of space and I often resort to washing by hand in the sink. In the UK I relied on launderettes for years, and the results were far and away better than this object that sits in our laundry room.

We bought a LG front loader for $700 - cost my mate in the Uk 700 pounds for the same one. We got a free 5 year warranty thrown in as we bought a drier at the same time. So if we have any problems it will be covered. LG include a 3 yr warranty anyway.
It does a 30 min wash and has a time saver button if you want to reduce longer cycles. All stuff is clean, even though I am using the wrong powder in it! I didnt know there were different ones for top loaders and I bought a huge pack A miracle anything gets my kids white school socks clean - they run around in bare foot!
