Thanks everyone, especially for the suggestion about MBTTUK, I'll mention that to him tomorrow. Dont know if he'll use it (or at least not straight away) but maybe just knowing that its there might get him thinking.

I do think he has himself locked into a certain way of thinking. Maybe MBTTUK will start to give him alternatives. I hope so for his sake - and mine ;) cos then maybe he won't be such a GOM anymore :sneaky::o:D

Beedubya, good luck with your move and I hope you love life back in UK.

I think the fact that he has opened up to you means that he obviously sees you as someone he can talk to about his problems, which is really good. The first step can be the hardest and the fact that he is talking openly about this suggests to me that he wants to make changes.

It might mean he has reached a point in his life where he is really strating to push his boundaries and start to think about his own future and that takes some courage for many people.

So rather than preaching about what he should / shouldn't have done over the last 20 odd years I would prefer to think what he could achieve for himself starting from tomorrow.

I hope he doesn't :(

Honestly OP if you can persuade him to even just lurk on MBTTUK, he will feel sooooo good to know he is not alone. I cannot describe the relief on finding BE and knowing that I was not alone in my thoughts and feelings........

I think being there with like minded people will help him enormously. He will get nothing but support and compassion from us other posters, some are in even worse positions than him where they really are trapped....it may give him the impetus needed to do something....

I'm with you on that one. Although I don't post in there much, its a little haven of sanity at times when I have my low moments :o Just knowing you're not alone in what you feel makes a big difference :)

Just wondered if OP's colleague is lurking on MBTTUK? If so, has it made him feel a wee bit better?

I dont have much to do with school mums now, but in primary there were loads of english women sticking it out but not really loving it here at all.

Main reasons were its hubbys dream, partner wont go back, dont want to splilt family, married an aussie, kids in later stages of education ( guilty as charged  ) the latest reason I heard is UK is in too much of a mess to go back.

OP's friends situation is pretty common IME.

Which is the reason why I won't go back just yet. Too much of a mess is an understatement. It is bankrupt and the people are about to be taxed to death.

Hong Kong or Singapore here I come methinks...
