Or would I be able to opt for the "more stringent" new legislation, which would allow me to get citizenship a year earlier?
We don't know yet, sorry. We'll need to see the text of the Bill when it reappears in Parliament incorporating the new amendments.

It has made my day to know that my time spent as temp resident (3yrs 9 months so far) will count towards my time to get citizenship.

Up to a maximum of 3 years. You will still need to clock up at least 1 year as a PR regardless.

I had feared that I'd have to do 4 years from getting PR (as I would do two under current legislation). I'm over the moon that I may be able to get my small tree only 12 months after PR!

I am about to apply for my third (different employer) 457 visa and hope to have employer sponsored PR 6 months later.

Could also work out in my favour, as long as I can use the new rules rather than the old ones (ironically enough). I really feel that if I can feel I am "part" of Australia, able to vote and feel part of the country, then it will feel more like home.

Did you actually read the announcement? If not, strongly recommended to do so. Pay special attention to what the Minister says about existing permanent residents.

In simple terms:

Arrive in Oz and take PR before 26 Jan 07, and you can be a citizen in 2008.

No, that won't work. People almost won't be able to "combine" the new and old laws to their advantage. At best you'll be able to select one or the other.

If you're PR by Jan 07 then the old rule will apply - so the bloke is right in applying old rules, but 08 may of course be too soon - if you've only just got in the country.

My wife who got PR 2 months ago will be on old rules, and will therefore get the operation lined up from July 08.

About then. But for you, it would be around 2011 under existing rules too. So it probably doesn't make much difference either way.
