Most people though (huge generalisation here) don't look total pillocks when wearing baseball caps or trainers. I'm sure you look stunning in your Gillingham shirt ;) I still think it's sad:D
I look at 'fashion' labels and think 'pillock' too so I guess we all have our prejudices ;) |

Disclaimer: Haven't read the whole thread!
IMHO These people have a problem leaving behind the 'council estate, 'I'm a builder you know', chav culture! I personally think it's very, very sad, almost to the extent that I would admit to emigrating to get away from these kind of people....worrying that it still goes on though. Mind you, I thought it was just Perth that was like this? Ah well, onwards and upwards! |

 Flag Pole plebs:o! - Please don't come and live next door to us, we're doing our best to move away from the CHAVS:zzz: in this country:eek::eek: Why don't you reconsider your reasons for leaving the UK?? You might be waisting your burberry spending money on getting over here:rofl::rofl: |

Just about sums up the Welsh - feeling the need to fly a huge great flag in their garden in order to 'remind' themselves where they come from!
:);) As for football shirts, when was the last time you saw a doctor/lawyer in his replica man u shirt? Educated people don't feel the need portray themselves as some sort of gang member. Is it any coincidence that most of the people in defence of footy shirt wearers on here are from dodgy northern towns? And thats a real insult coming from a brummie:p |
Re: UK Flags on display in Aus !
On a related note, I notice that on purpose-built estates there are some huge flag poles with Aussie flags on them on the plots, it must be an option I guess.
During a visit coinciding with the World Cup last year there was a house on the other side of the valley (opposite my Mothers place) flying both the St George Cross and the Aussie flag. I happened to pass the house one day with my Aussie wife and daughter and got into a conversation with the owner about their circumstances. Very pleasant chat it was too and one that wouldn't have happened without the flag. Repeatedly feeling the need to assert a 'difference' is when it all gets a bit tacky and probably is not a good sign for the long-term happiness of the person in their adopted country. |

Its all about small man syndrome, you are more likely to see the jocks, paddys and welsh flying flags as they feel inadequate next to civilised society:p

Everyone feels the need to 'belong' in some capacity whether it be the wearing of a sports shirt or the purchase of a BMW. |
Re: UK Flags on display in Aus !
The OP's 'half pint' reference leads me to believe that they have a tendency to label or stereotype people or things. Ditto some of the posters who, it appears, have yet to arrive in Australia.
Some of us who are actually living out here chose to do so to get away from this kind of self-opinionated bigotry which was becoming increasingly prevalent back in the UK. LondonCabbie's ignorant and disrespectful comment typifies this and is consistent with someone (I suspect, but may be wrong) who believes that the world revolves around that cramped part of England south of Watford Gap. IMO the displaying of flags (national, sporting or otherwise) in a discreet manner is neither provocative nor 'chavvy'. Although not a 'flag person' myself, if people choose to maintain a sense of identity by displaying a reminder of their roots or former life then that's fine. 'Flag people' may, like me, work with Aussies, socialise with Aussies, have an active role in their local Australian sports team and try wherever possible to embrace the different lifestyle offered to them by Australia. I cannot see how someone like this could be accused of not integrating with Australian Society Live and let live. |
Re: UK Flags on display in Aus !
It seems there is a north-south divide - Northerners tend to come from council houses and display UK/England flags while in OZ, whereas expats originally from the South of England are more cosmopolitan, educated and at ease in the global village, and hence don't display UK flags in OZ.
There are exceptions on both sides of course, but I think the trend is clear. |

That's a sweeping generalisation, and coming from someone who has probably never vertured outside of the M25. So the whole of the north is full of council houses eh?
