I would be horrified if Tesco opened in Australia. I can walk one block to my local butcher, baker etc which provide excellent quality goods at reasonable prices and a good chat with the chap behind the counter.

If Tescos used any of the tactics in Australia that they have been permitted to use in the UK then I would be able to walk one block to a row of empty graffitied shops with the odd charity shop or all night kebab shop in the middle.

I'm glad Coles and Woolworths have this high-price duopoly, it keeps the local shops in business.

Answer live in Melbourne we have 24 hour supermarkets, my locals open at 7 am and close at midnight. Bunnings opens at 7 am, only a couple of 24 hour chemists now due to crime but they stay open till 9. Shops seven days a week.

We also have Aldi all over the place and Costco

Even then it would only be able to open for business between the hours of 7 and 8 on a Wednesday morning, so as to comply with the wonderfully up to date trading by laws they have here. Also it would not have a booze section as shoppers here it seems cannot be trusted to shop for alcohol and food at the same time just in case they might try and combine the two in some weird and mutated way (Vodka Baked Beans any one?). Perhaps even the entire stock of the supposed future stores would be made up of only Coles and Woolworths brands, so as not to provide unfair competition to the afore mentioned companies (This is probably one of the requirements that has to be met for Tescos to open up down here). If or when Tescos do open up down under you can see the headlines now, (especially in the Courier Mail) "POMMIE BASTARD SUPERMARKET TO OPEN HERE, WHO THE HELL DO THEY THINK THEY ARE?!"

To conclude then, I have probably answered my own question but never the less since living here (specifically in Queensland) I do rather miss 24 hour shopping, the convenience of being able to get everything under one roof, decent ready meals and a little bit more variety..... Oh dear probably gone a bit too far with this one! I am married to an Australian however and I do love this country honest!!! The quality of meat is a 1000 times better down under that’s for sure. If Tesco do come then it might perhaps open the flood gates, just Imagine M & S coming down under, the head lines then might read "POMPUS POMMIE BASTARD DEPARTMENT STORE TO OPEN HERE..".
we even have a 24 hour k-mart in canberra... bit strange really.

I'll just add that in Vic supermarkets can sell alcohol with the food, but for some reason most still have a separate liquor store. Presumably it allows them to run different hours.

I'm 99% certain that Tesco's will make a move into the Australian market, as it is a very profitable market. (i.e. we get ripped off left, right and centre by Coles & Woolies).

Ultimately this will mean a cheaper weekly shopping bill as Coles & Woolies will be forced to drop prices.

But Buzzybee is right.... it will come at the expense of small business.

The good ones will survive - as in the UK.

Also the destruction of the high street is not entirely down to Tesco. Most of the blame should be placed at the feet of the local money grabbing councils.

The reason our liquor is sold separately from the supermarket general goods i e annexed store is because to sell alcohol the sales person is required to have a "responsible delivery of alcohol certificate" therefore young underage people could not get this certificate to be able to serve in supermarkets.

Tesco tried to buy coles about 4-5 years ago. I remember they met resistance into coming into Australia. Kryspy Kreme and Starbarcks have already been denied to franchise in Perth

I am the public.... and if I saw Tesco's logos start to appear around here I would seriously consider emigrating! I do NOT want Australia to resemble the UK - if I did I would not have moved here!

ha ha.... you are one member of the public. 1 in 20,000,000.

I want cheaper supermarket prices. BUT I also want butchers, fishmongers and fruit & veg shops to prosper....

edit - just re-read that first line and it comes across as a bit off... not my intention at all, sorry. Just trying to say that some will agree with you, but others won't.
