I used rescue remedy which you get from a health shop and it drips on your tongue plus try really hard to show my kids I am not scared at all
I watch movies and play games with the kids, eat and drink and shop whenever the trolly is near us !!!! lol
Just to try to overcome it myself, I also have a hypnotherapy cd but I am too much of a strong minded person to believe it !!!! (stupid I know as it should help!!)
Try and keep calm about it and tell yourself its silly as it is safer than driving a car !!!
Good Luck

I take a similar approach - wouldn't really feel comfortable taking pills for it, and believe I can conquer my fear, and I must admit it seems to be improving. I have taken rescue remedy and also Kalms, as well as carrying a stone which was supposed to induce calmness (now try telling me that's not mind over matter). Sometimes I am better flying alone, and if not alone then definitely just with hubby as I go into a silent stupor as I am concentrating on not being scared.

My biggest fear is always that I will get so scared that I'll get up and try to open the door, but my husband always talks me through how silly it is that I am actually scared of being scared! And it's true when you think of it like that. I also move my feet a lot while flying because then i don't feel the turbulence as much, keep headphones or walkman on so that I don't obsess over every change in engine noise, and if i do get nervous deep breathe until I feel calm. I hate people who panic coz they make me panic more (I think the panic makes me kinda selfish)!

I also find that the planes to Oz are a lot better coz they are big and feel more solid. If you have the option travelling business class seems to help me as you feel less crowded in and have more space around you, so it doesn't feel so claustrophobic.

You'll be fine, it's mind over matter, and from the posts I've read you sound like a strong confident person so you just need to tell yourself you will be okay.

Good luck with it

>>Right on, how many plane crashes do you hear about compared to road accidents? I bet you travel in a car ok? Flying is one of the safest forms of transport, especially with the way technology has come along, an aircraft can take off and land its self, the crew are there "just in case".
Dont worry about it, its a doddle. (easy for me to say, I know) <<

Best to fly with an airline which doesn't use those expensive, redundant, crew then!

I am also a nervous flyer, I'm going to check with the dr. about some pills, but I'll also take my rescue remedy and try to make it through with just that if possible. My next door neighboor is a pilot and we've lived here for almost 7 years, and he's still alive and well. They have a halloween party every year and other pilots are there every year alive and well. A little girl my daughter dances with has a pilot for a dad, so there you have it about 5 people I know that are pilots and they are going to work and coming home just like everyone else. That does help me a little when I get on a plane, if they fly 30 times a year times 5 people, that's 150 flights per year x 7 years, that's over 1000 flights with no problems whatsoever. I'm still going to go for the "happy pills" but logically we really shouldn't be nervous, I think it's a lack of control, at least for me.

Why not ask for the same happy pills that they use? <g>

Will need to stock up on sleeping tablets and hypnotherapy CD's. Phobia is so bad have been looking at cruises to Brisbane, only problem is they only depart once a year, and take 43 days to get there!

Hi Ali,

Can definitely recommend this course - they explain all about the tolerances of the aircraft, plus take you on a flight.

http://flyingwithoutfear.info/index2.htm

There are a few other companies that do these sorts of courses as well.

If anyone has any real questions relating to fear of flying feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to try and answer before you spend the money on a course!
