Well, here we are at last in Tassie, still feels very weird!

Staying in a fantastic house in Lindisfarne for a few weeks untilwe find a rental, looked at a few today but they were pretty awful:ohmy:

Got some more to look at tomorrow, have spent the last few days sorting out bank accounts, getting a mobile, checking out the areas, and generally catching up on jet lag.

Went shopping yesterday, shocked by the prices, think we were spoilt in the UK by all the offers and bargains at the supermarket, everything seemed very expensive here.

On the other hand, we had fish and chips at Mures, and was pleasantly surprised by the cost:)

Lovely weather on Monday, was colder today but really not too bad considering it is winter!

All the people we have met have been really friendly and helpful:D

Will catch up again soon.

Sam

Hi Sammy,
Know what you mean with the shopping but you will find local veg shops and farmers markets which have better food, and most places have specials on just buy in bulk when they are on, specially if it is things with no sell buy date like toilet rolls and stuff.
Hope you settle in and come up to Launceston some time its a wonderful place.

Hi Sammy T, welcome at last to the little island shaped like a heart

BTW No one ever came to Tassie for the shopping! That's what that big island next door is for

Hi Everyone. :) What's the weather been like where you are?
Someone i chat to in the North of the Island said that there were severe weather warnings for them yesterday...

Kerry - how's the ground doing - i hear you've had some rain?

Kerry/SamT/Zoe - more good news again last night - my Dad is coming along in leaps and bounds (thankfully). He's now conscious and seems to be doing much better....he was even chatting to my Mum last night at the hospital and ate something... such a relief. I'm off work now until Monday evening - so i'll be going up on the train with my Mum to see him tomorrow but i just wanted to say thanks for all your kind words - really appreciated.

Cathy :)

hi Donna
according to the Mercury, flood season is starting in Huonville already-hopefully your place is higher up and not near the river?

Weather here is cold and wet, although had a lovely sunny and dry weekend. Ever heard that expression "it never rains but it pours" well it certainly does here. Lachlan which is not too far from us got 3 inches of rain in one night!! It is only 5-10 mins from us, but we didn't get that much thank goodness, as our driveway seems to be washing away!!! Its supposed to be a chilly 10c tomorrow, brrrrr.

They have a half year toy sale here, so I'm gonna go and layby some stuff for Alex for xmas tomorrow. I have my eyes on a trampoline that has $70 knocked off the price, that should keep him busy over the summer

Welcome to Tassie Sam, hurry up and give me a call will ya!!!:)

Hi Sammy,

Welcome to Tas.

Finding rental houses up near Lonnie was pretty dire too, we bought in the end even tho we may only be staying here 2 years!

We have had some pretty cool thunder and lightening up north and loads of rain- however the dams don't seem to be much fuller.

The shopping isn't up to much I admit- but as I am not a girl driven by fashion it doesn't bother me much! There are plenty of outside clothing stores etc.

Tesco however is much missed.....

Hi Ian, Yes the river is starting to flood, but only into it's usual flood plains (?) I am up high, but the best part is my work is on the other side of the river so hopefully I might get some days off 'cause I can't get there!!!

I had read that you'd had a lot of rain! I dont suppose people complain too much though do they if the ground needed it so much - hope your driveway survives the downpours though! ;)

Worth getting Alex some bits in the sale - i think the older the kids get - the less you seem to get for your money as their stuff might get a bit smaller toywise - but it's more expensive! Now that Eden is 5 we have no idea what to get her this Christmas.....i'd have normally started to get a few bits to put away but have held back as we're still hoping to be in Tas for Christmas....and there's no point getting stuff incase it's just in the container come Christmas!! :D
Those trampolines are great. We'd like to get Eden one when we move....
Such good exercise for them - they keep kids amused for ages....
(i bet you and Duncan end up getting on it too though!) :D

Hi Kay, thanks :) they've moved my Dad again (he's now in Bethnal Green rather than Whitechapel) but it's a hosp we're familiar with as he's spent time there before and the staff were great there....Fingerscrossed he'll continue to improve...

It must feel colder with the winds the closer you are to the coast....Hope you're wrapping up warm! :)

Hi Cathy, it's been a long time since we saw you on the thread....Hope you're well ? How have you been finding life on the Island?

Re: Tasmania??

When i first got to Burnie (9 months ago) i noticed how strong those winds were. Roaring 40's i think they were, very strong. And when it rains hard, it's more like elephants and rhinos instead of cats and dogs. Miss the place and the clean air......oh so clean. Beats breathing the treacle here in Newcastle. Got two agents trying to sell our house, so fingers crossed. Any one know what the next lottery numbers will be just out of interest? Long shot but you never know.

Is it really the 1st frost you've seen? that must be weird - having been used to it in the UK...:)
Most houses dont have double glazing do they? does that mean you get loads of condensation on your windows? Our house was like that when we
1st bought it until we replaced all the windows - we used to hate having to wipe the insides of the windows every morning...:sneaky:
