I think we need to get off the subject of creepy crawlies for a bit.....otherwise Beth will be having nightmares resembling the film arachnophobia! :)

Beth - what animals do you like ? lets go down that route.....:D

Know what you mean, beth, I have a dreadful phobia about spiders, I have nightmares, probably a couple a month where I work up, sweating, shaking and shouting, I usually think they are crawling all over me. By the time, I've managed to put the light on, I normally realise it was all a dream:o

I'm thinking about a spider phobia course, I'll have a look later on the internet and see what there is. I know they do one at London Zoo but it was really pricey!

I keep trying to tell myself a big huntsman is just like a mouse, quite sweet really, it hasn't worked yet:eek:

Sorry, just seen your post!

Yes, Beth, think about the cheeky possums, the cute wallabies, the kookaburras, the parakeets, the penguins (!) and all the other animals.
We were lucky enough to see an echidna at St Columba Falls, in the north east, he was really cute:wub:

It's not a nice phobia to have really. If you are scared of heights you just don't climb a ladder or look over a cliff etc.........but spiders could be lurking anyway!!!
I check under my bed every night, check the sun visor in the car now before I can get in, I worry there's one in the washing basket so take the clothes out one by one.......I look behind the toilet even.......and that's just in the UK!!!!
Really don't know what has caused my phobia......can't think of anything from when I was a child.....I've always been scared of them.

I dont think you're alone Beth. I would imagine arachnophobia must be one of the most common phobia's. Sam and Ian&Helena are right though - you probably should look into some aversion therapy - or if you cant bear the thought of actually coming into contact with the beasts - then you could try hypnotherapy instead....you might only need one or two sessions to feel better about them.

I have a phobia - which is probably the most pathetic phobia ever! All my friends laugh about it  I cannot bear polystyrene - especially when you open presents and the whole thing is contained in polysterene packaging! It's the texture, the squeaking of it all....
Once my friends locked me in another friends car that had a sun-roof - and they threw in hundreds of those polystyrene balls onto my head etc.... boy was i all clammy and sweaty after i managed to get out - wicked lot they are :sneaky:

LOL......but if that had been spiders being poured in I would have had a cardiac arrest!!!!
On a serious note.........I really need to decide if I can live in Tas with the chance of seeing a huntsman
May not be able to go through with this after all :(

I really hope you dont let your phobia be the deciding factor of whether you move to Australia or not...:( I know i cant truly appreciate your feelings regarding spiders/insects as i dont have the same phobia as you. I know it's easy for us all to laugh about such things - but i know there's that very serious side to the problem as well...

All i can say is that during our 3 weeks in Oz - we saw just the 1 spider - and that was in Perth. We saw no creepy crawlies / no flies - nothing scary whatsoever in our time in Tas.
When we stayed in a hotel in Mandurah in Perth - i must admit i did check the bedding etc for anything that might be lurking.....but there was loads of greenery outside the bedroom windows. We had no such fear or desire to do the same in our hotel in Tas..... I just didnt get the same feel there - felt completely at home very quickly after arriving...

I think to not come - on the basis that you're going to see things - that you may be lucky not to actually encounter for a while - or even very often - would be a terrible shame - especially after everything you've been through to get your visa's.... Chances are you'd see a spider in your house if it's been treated less than we do here in the UK....

Please dont let it worry you too much....

Hi Beth

I've just contacted Bristol Zoo, they've got a "Living with Spider" session tonight! Obviously I've missed that one, but have asked them if and when they are doing another one. Not a bad price £85 for a 3 1/2 hour session. Will let you know if they reply.

Changing the subject, have you had removal quotes and who did you get?
First place I spoke to yesterday was John Mason, who have quite good reports, but they will not come to Somerset to do a quote, too far apparently!

TBH Pickfords seem to be ok again now......and quoted us £3,500 for 20' container to Hobart.......insurance and AQIS additional though.......about £300 insurance and hopefully £300 max for AQIS. So just over £4000 in total

I've been in Tas for one year now and I've seen two huntsman, one under the house in the dark, and one on the car (which gets parked under a tree).
I wouldn't be worrying too much about it all.

We have something big living under our house, think it's a possum. We hear scratching at night after we've gone to bed, and a few weeks ago I found the big rubbish bin I used to keep the chook's feed in had tooth marks in it!

Thanks Beth, thought Pickfords had gone bust or have they been take over?
£4000 for 20 ft container does not sound too bad (if you say it quickly!)

They were the cheapest quote we've had for door-to-door delivery. I'm going to get Masons in too.

I'll let you know what they offer at Bristol Zoo, perhaps we could meet up and do it together. Bit of moral support:wub:
