Hi! We're moving out in February and I've found a great website www.cityhobo.com which might be of some help. I love it so maybe it'll be of some help to you... or anyone else looking to move to Sydney!!

We bought a house in Engadine, Sutherland shire in March and love it there. It's about an hour commute to the city and about 20 min to either Cronulla or the southern beaches (Thirroul, Stanwell Tops, Austimer). The schools are meant to be good and we could even afford to get a house with a decent garden and a pool. All the areas in the Shire are ok, I prefer Gymea, Bonnet Bay or Como to Miranda and Jannali though.

Hi there,
there are plenty of suburbs in Sydney you could look at. Given you are not fussed about the travelling time, it gives you more scope.
The North Shore and northern beaches are very family friendly. Chatswood, Artarmon and Lane Cove are nice. St Ives is on the quiet side. It's become popular with South African expats. Hornsby is a bit dull. But some of the ritzy neighbourin suburbs like Wahroonga and Turramaurra are fab, if you have plenty of cash. If you are after a good beach suburb, try Mona Vale or Collaroy. Collaroy is popular with British expats.
Paddington and the eastern suburbs are great but pricey. But if you live there, you won't be bored. There are dozens of good cafes, bars to keep you occupied, and Centennial Park for outdoor activities. Paddington is walking distance to the city, it is close to Bondi Beach, to beautiful Woollahra, and to hip cool Surry Hills.
Maybe you should check out a website called cityhobo.com to see if it can help you with your decision.

We live in Mona Vale and are very happy.
Husband works at the airport and has a pretty crap journey, but this is a great place to live.
Please forgive me for being bias.
