Default Stupid misconceptions of OZ

Anyone know people overseas who have stupid misconceptions of Australia.
For example l knew someone who thought it was hot every day in OZ and arrived in Sydney in July expecting to go surfing and could'nt believe it was cold. This person also beleived that the outback and desert was about a 30
minute drive west of Sydney.

Where do I start? The fact that ladies and gents really are referred to as 'sheilas and bruces' - as if? Or that all guys are 'ockers'? That everyone surfs? Everyday is above 30 degrees? Or my sweet little nan telling me that where ever I live, I should expect to drive 2 hours just to get a cup of tea! Let them live in their own little worlds! Best not burst that bubble X

Oh and the best one, its cheaper to live here than in the UK! Yup, for about the first week while you're still comparing the good ole £££££'s! Then reality sets in, you begin to earn aussie $$$'s, get taxed at 40% and it suddenly hits you! Its more expensive than the UK! What a surprise!

My SIL told me that I wouldn't be able to hang my washing outside, as it would be covered in insects, which I would then have to iron... to kill them all.
We would also have to check there weren't snakes in the pool (hmmm, what pool?) and that if we stuffed up and came back, no-one would ever talk to us.
My dad (bless him) told me that nasty spiders would come down through the roof and bite us He has actually listened and stopped that load of nonsense!

You could move to the happy state Did you see last nights news? something like 89% of South Australians said drugs were easy to get, Ok but this cracked me up (no pun intended), most who bought ecstacy at $30 a hit used it at home

Boogie woogie party time at home in adelaide, who said it was boring down there.

Ah Larissa what kind loving family you have! Mine are just the same and said all kinds of crazy stuff. My sis was the worst with her 'dingo ate the baby' tales, and how they 'hunt' for children. Or that crocs travel miles and miles over land just to find human flesh to eat! Or the worst thing she said, sorry asked, was that if our plane were to down and we all perished could we state in the will that we want to be buried in oz - that way she'd get a free holiday with the family! Nice hey?

But Jad, every day is a happy day here, we don't need drugs! You can feel that love and happiness in the air! Hang on............yes, Darius plus guitar are doing a solo in the background! Gotta say tho when you read this thread back makes you wonder why we're here? My prediction will be another thread saying 'why are those poms whinging again?' Posted from those who don't live here or have only been here a few weeks!
