Student Loans have been the biggest pain for us since migrating. We have informed them countless times of our address, they were sending letters to our old UK address for ages, now that is sorted they are sending us letters 2nd class post... I deferred back in June as I'm not working (home duties) and supported by my hubby, they sent that back and then got a flipping debt collector on my case... the list is endless and we've had to thoroughly document every correspondance we have had with them. I have a huge wad of letters, faxes and notes re phonecalls (don't bother with phonecalls, you have no proof to back you up).
Finally my case is being dealt with by email and I seem to have a SLC employee who seems to know what she is doing, I haven't heard from the debt collectors so assume that this has been taken care of... this whole thing has been a headache.
Now my hubby is getting the same, he is paying back his loan and they are sending nasty letters although his payments are on time! They are also 2nd class letters including some to our old address, so imagine our annoyance when the deadline for action is 2 weeks ago.
Honestly, I have been so upfront and honest with them, I have never been in "debt" before in my life and have provided them with my details well before I needed to.
They seriously need some quality control... but the worst thing is that there are hardly any lines of complaint open to you. The distance only makes it harder.
So, in short, collect and file every piece of correspondance you have from them. Do not rely on phonecalls. Send important stuff by fax or registered post. BTW The fax number they provide on the headed notepaper doesn't work overseas, you will need to ring for that.
I totally intend to pay back my student loan when I return to work, fulfilling the conditions of the loan which I accepted when taking out the loan.

I thought it was just me, maybe my file had landed under the coffee percolator or something, but now hubby is getting it, I'm just not so sure its a one off!
Hope it all goes well for you
Take care
