student debt question....
#1
Hi
I have/will have approx £18,000 worth of student debt does anyone know if I have to clear this before immigrating to Oz? Or can I still pay it out of my aussie wages each week like I do here?
Or even better does it get wiped while I’m out of the country (ok I know this one is wishful thinking but worth a try lol)
Thanks

to be honest, what we did when we moved from the UK to the Netherlands with student debts was to still keep an English bank account and get them to direct debit each month from there, and we just transferred some money across every few months to keep the account in credit.
at the time we couldnt get it taken out of our salaries, but I would be surprised if you could do this if you move countries.

As for your uk credit, it will be buggered but unless you really think you might return to live, go ahead and burn the bridge

I suppose it would be costly to sue and 50% is better than 0%

What you all have to remember if you leave the UK and dont pay your debts they will still be there in 5 or 6 years time so if things do not work out for you in oz you will come back to them plus interest and a bad credit history, not that i am saying any of you are doing that just want you to know what will happen
But sa to the original question you should be able to pay you student loan for from australia. It is very rare that they will ask you about your financial history from the uk that is why it can be very hard to get any kind of credit in oz when you first move here.

We used to stay in fortWilliam when we went to Scotland love the loch's and and the mountains in Scotland plus the people will be going back there for a visit next year can't wait
P.S it is refreshing to see some-one on here with you outlook on life you seem to know what you want and are going for it, thae fact that as you say you love scotland but you know from the out start that you are just going to oz for a break but you will return to scotland, how long are you going to oz for.

to much
what i should also have made clear in this post is the family who moved to NZ continued paying their debt via direct debit all is well if you keep your accounts open in the uk. just wanted to explain re read it and sounds like i am saying leave without paying your debts! which i am not, it is of course everyones choice to do what they want but i want to be able to return to the uk without any added stresses. cheers xx

Student loans people aren't bad if you let them know, anyway, if your not earning whatever the amount is these days, I think it's £15K, then you don't need to pay it back, and then your only paying a % over that amount, you could just when your earning enough transfer enough to pay off an annual amount to save on bank transfer fee's...and it's good to tell your LEA about it as they are quite good in keeping the SLC up to date on what your up to and where abouts you are.
