It looks like graduates who default on their student loans are going to be put on credit blacklists:

When we moved to the USA and decided to take out a mortgage the mortgage broker did an international credit search; this was for the UK and for Singapore where we had lived for a few years before being posted to the States....

My mum works for the SLC. If anyone has specific questions, pm me and I'll get them answered for you. The other option is to defer your loan repayments, that way you're not defaulting
. If you ever return to the UK then the loan still exists though, but you can still defer until earning over the threshold for paying it back.

I heard or read somewhere that if you move abroad they look at your overseas earnings and convert back to £s so maybe you can defer teh loan for a year or more.
ps tell them you are travelling

On a previous thread (which i cant find) someone said that if you let student loans know that you can pay your student loan into an international account.
Answer 2
With response to some of the other replies regarding leaving debt.... some debt collection agencies and banks chase debts worldwide and also use tracing agents... fees can be added to some debts too which can increase your original debt substantially. If an international tracing agent is used the fees added to an account can be double what it would be in the UK. Thus increasing your debt.
You also need to consider that the 6 years previously mentioned can be a little longer...
timeline for you (eg)
1. £5k+ debt up to date when you leave the country.
2. 3 months later a default registered against you as you havent informed them of a change of address they dont know you arent at the UK address.
3. Up to 12 months later CCJ issued against you at previous UK address, which as you are unaware of.. goes untestified in court and low and behold your credit rating is mega messed up for 6 years.
In total that is the 6 years from CCJ on your credit file plus the 12 months+ it has taken them chasing you since you left the country.
Plus for some reason you needed to use an Australian bank there may be a possibility that it would be linked to a UK bank and they would find you even quicker.
It does happen and quite regularly trust me.People can think they are safe for up to 5 years from leaving the UK but they arent safe for approx 7 years. Debt can still be chased for a significant length of time.
It is always wise to let your creditors know what the score is. When you move to oz and 'if' your income drops, many creditors will accept a reduced payment due to circumstances without defaulting you. Just something for you to consider, if you arent able to pay of debts when leaving the country.

Seriously though, if you need to mail them, ask whoever you speak to for their email address and send queries etc there.TJ

I let the Student loan Company know that we were emigrating - I only had a small loan to pay off. They were given a forwarding address and so far (2 years plus) have not contacted me to arrange for any payment to be recontinued or any assessment on my current income. I assume that they have just written off the debt. However, I have not had a letter to say it has been written off so all a bit odd really!!

yeah thats what I mean, I contacted them about the loan and I have had no correspondence as well. I am not going to the other address the same as ours on the road though, last time I did that I got my head ripped off by the woman who lives there, telling me that it was ridiculous that I had the same address as her.
not my fault love blame the bloody council lol
Mmm strange some people
